For the last 2 weeks, the IAF and USAF have reportedly been conducting joint attack drills near the Iraqi-Iranian border, which we last saw happen leading up to February 28th.
This is most likely happening to keep Iran on their toes, and to make it harder for Iran to know exactly when the U.S. and Israel will strike.
Yesday there were reports of heavy Israeli fighter jet activity over Iraq and Israel.
These actions have multiple purposes:
- Keep Iran on high alert
- Test Iraq and Syria reaction
- Get information about Iranian Air Defense and Missile locations
- Identify possible communication channels used by Iran with Axis of resistance
- Surprise Iran when they finally decide to attack.

USMC officer Travis Hord recently posted a report on Linkedin showing what a USMC fight for a hostile coastline might entail, highlighting 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit training modeled on an “Advance Base Operations” concept developed in 2019 “to support distributed operations in contested waters.”
The post included a graphic featuring a fictionalized map, and depicting movement of small, low-visibility USMC assets over the course of an island-hopping campaign, engagement with enemy forces, setting up forward arming and refueling points (FARPs), airfields, air defenses, scouting ops, anti-ship cruise missile fires and maritime interdiction.
The graphic also simulated the kinds of enemy surface, undersea and air attacks US forces may run up against.
Picked up by analysts including US Navy Reserve intel officer Blake Herzinger, the graphic spread virally as a “leaked Pentagon graphic” on how Marines might try to seize Iranian islands in amphibious assault ops.
But casual observers immediately poked holes in the plans, pointing to the immense concentration of drone and missile fire Iran would amass to fend off such assaults, the issues the US would face even trying to slip an amphibious assault group into the region, logistical issues, and the wisdom of trying to move troops even closer to Iran after the IRGC wiped out nearly all of the US’s bases in the Gulf in the first weeks of the war.
