  2. Operation Overcast was certainly underway by July 1945, approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff to bring into the US 350 German scientists, including #WernerVonBraun and his V2 rocket team, chemical weapons designers, and artillery and submarine engineers.

  3. Tom Lehrer doesn’t even have to parody this because he does it himself.

    > Who will be able to afford the taxi rides offered by this system? That’s for a different department to answer.

  4. Of course, the Heidegger controversy has its political coloring. The same people who use Heidegger’s Nazi-hood to hit deconstruction or France or continental philosophy on the head – usually American academics traveling between the New Criterion and the New York review of Books circuit – have little to say about, say, #WernervonBraun, or the whole flotilla of Nazis that were calmly taken up by the Americans in Operation Paperclip.

  5. The first #rocket to #launch from Cape #Canaveral was #Bumper 8, a modified V-2 #missile with the existing WAC Corporal rocket developed by the #US for a second stage.
The #V2 was developed by Werner von Braun for Nazi Germany. Under Operation Paperclip, many German scientists and engineers were sought out by the United States, including von Braun, who was eager to go with the Americans over the Soviets. He also provided the US with information about locations to find V-2 components, which the US happily took out from under its Allies’ noses.
The #WACCorporal was developed by the US Army Ordinance Corps and a laboratory at the University of California.
    #Bumper8’s launch was a failure.
