  1. A heliotron uses continuous coils to generate a helically shaped magnetic field — basically a magnetic cage that keeps the hot #fusion plasma confined.
It’s a similar concept to the stellarator #Wendelstein7X.

  7. It’s hard to believe, but we have started already 10 years to operate #Wendelstein7X - a #fusion experiment in Greifswald. First plasmas could then be sustained for hundreds of ms, last campaign we made a discharge which lasted for minutes.
I believe however that the best measure of success is that it brought a stellarator line of fusion research from being a niche to mainstream. Two well funded companies in Germany, two in US want to build a reactor based on #W7X concept.

  8. „Scientists Are Now 43 Seconds Closer to Producing Limitless Energy“

    popularmechanics.com/science/e

„As plasma was heated with microwaves over those record-breaking 43 seconds, the fuel injector provided the stellarator with 90 pellets of frozen hydrogen ions. The microwave heating system used electron cyclotron resonance—the most effective method for fusion, which uses electromagnetic waves to heat and ionize plasma to temperatures that (in this case) reached a scorching 30 million degrees Celsius (about 54 million degrees Fahrenheit). Because success depended on balancing heating with pulses of incoming fuel, the pellet injector was programmed with automatic pulse rates, which is an unprecedented move.“ #Wendelstein7X #Greifswald #fusionenergy #stellarator

  9. #Zoomposium with Prof. Dr. #Thomas #Klinger: “The sun on earth - #nuclear fusion as an #energy source”

This time we talk about the #dis-/advantages of #nuclearfusiontechnology with Thomas Klinger, who has been a “Scientific Member” of the #MaxPlanckSociety since 2001 and is Director of the “#Stellarator #Dynamics and #Transport” division at the Institute for #PlasmaPhysics. There he heads the highly successful #Wendelstein7X project.

  10. Wendelstein 7-X, Bessy II: Deutsche Großforschung läuft in Energiekrise weiter

Die steigenden Stromkosten stellen auch die Großforschungszentren vor Probleme. Außerplanmäßige Pausen sind hierzulande trotzdem nicht geplant.
