Rescue Your Belkin Wemo with Home Assistant
Last year, Belkin ended support for their Wemo home automation devices. As I explained last year, these could be added natively to Apple HomeKit so they could still work. Today I’m going to explain another way to revive your dead Wemo devices long after Belkin’s service has been turned off!
I resurrected these Wemo Mini Smart Plug devices using PyWeMo!Saving the Wemos (Again!)
I found a couple of Wemo Mini Smart Plug devices in my drawer that I missed when adding them to HomeKit last year. These were set up to a Wi-Fi network at a previous office, and I never activated them with HomeKit. Rather than toss them, I did some research. It turns out that they can still be revived and used natively in Home Assistant. Which is lucky, since that’s my preferred home automation software!
There’s a Python library called PyWeMo that can talk to some Belkin Wemo devices directly over the network. It appears that this is the same library used by Home Assistant to connect directly to Wemo devices as well! It supports quite a few devices, including the original Wemo Switch, Wemo Smart Light Switch, Wemo Mini Plugin Switch, and my collection of Wemo Mini Smart Plug devices!
For the purposes of this article, the best news is that PyWeMo is able to set the Wi-Fi SSID and password for a factory-reset Wemo device, effectively bringing it back to life! I was able to factory reset my spare Wemo Mini Smart Plug devices, connect them to my new Wi-Fi, and even give them friendly names. I was even able to add them to Apple HomeKit!
How to Use PyWeMo
Rescuing my Wemo devices with PyWeMo was a cinch! I used macOS, but the same procedure works on most operating systems since it runs in Python. Here’s a step-by-step guide.
1. Factory-Reset
Hold down the power switch for about 5 seconds while plugging in the device. After about 30 seconds the LED will alternate white and orange, which means it has set up its own Wi-Fi network for configuration.
This was the most nerve-wracking moment, since I was worried I would truly brick the Wemo devices. Make sure your device is supported, cross your fingers, and hope for the best!
2. Connect to the Wemo
After the Wemo is factory reset it creates its own Wi-Fi network for configuration. The SSID looks like “Wemo.Mini.abc”, at least with my devices. The network didn’t show up initially, but I was able to see it by opening the “Wi-Fi Settings” control panel on the Mac. Once connected, it gave me a 10.22.22.x IP address, with the Wemo device itself at 10.22.22.1.
3. Configure Wi-Fi with PyWeMo
Once you are connected to the Wemo’s own Wi-Fi network, PyWeMo can configure the target Wi-Fi SSID and password for the device to connect to in the future. It can also set a “friendly name” for the device, which is handy if you have more than one!
First, install PyWeMo:
pip install pywemoNow run Python and configure the device. Note, copy and paste each line one by one, since it takes a moment for some to run!

Note that I use the last four of the MAC address for the FriendlyName just to keep the devices straight. It’s not super friendly, but it is unique and printed on the back of the device. I also printed a label for each device with the Friendly Name and the HomeKit setup code and stuck it to the top. This is super handy since both of these are hidden when the device is plugged in…
4. Set a Static DHCP Address
This isn’t absolutely required, but I found references to Wemo devices being unreliable in Home Assistant when their IP address changed. So I manually went into my DHCP server (I run pfSense) and set up a static IP address assignment for each Wemo device. I also named the device according to the friendly name I assigned above.
Once this is done, unplug the Wemo device, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in so it will adopt the new IP address.
5. Add the Wemo Device to Home Assistant
I already had the Belkin Wemo integration added to Home Assistant, so it detected my new (old) Wemo switches automatically! You might need to add the integration in “Devices & Services” otherwise.
It took a good minute for the device to finish adoption and for the switch to show in Home Assistant. But once it did, I was able to toggle it on or off quickly and easily.
I also took a moment to set the device name in Home Assistant and Recreate Entity IDs to match the Friendly Name I set above. It can get really confusing when you have a ton of devices with the same name!
6. Add the Wemo Device to HomeKit (optional)
I was thrilled to find that I could add these devices to Apple HomeKit as well!
In my iPhone, I opened the Home app, tapped the “+” and selected “Add Accessory”. I then tapped “More options…” and found the device already listed, complete with the Friendly Name set earlier. I could then add it using the 8-digit code printed on the back of the device.
Again, having printed a label with the HomeKit code really helped, because otherwise it would be obscured when plugged in.
Stephen’s Stance
I wish every device had this kind of simple workflow to resurrect it once the manufacturer ends support. Honestly, that should be a legal requirement to eliminate e-waste! I especially want to thank the PyWeMo team for doing their part to help people like me continue to get use out of older devices!

So, Belkin is killing off the WeMo app at the end of the month, & Apple is forcing the HomeKit upgrade by February 10. We have WeMo smart plugs all over the place & are using an old iPad as our HomeKit hub. A Raspberry Pi with @homeassistant is running it all. We plan on buying an Apple TV to replace the iPad but are waiting for the new models to drop.
We may need to come up with some sort of plan B… 😬

Although my first concern was architectural, your wifi #iot devices require servers to be running. No matter how nice the device, when the company turns off servers the device is useless unless and until there is a firmware hack. Bleh. Local control only henceforth!

Local control still works fine though. Easily integrated into HomeAssistant.
Lots of cheap WeMo bits on eBay if you want a local-first smarthome.
