I bought a hobby #welder a few years ago, and have only run it off 120V so far, set to meager amps so I don't trip the breaker.
I got it to try to repair a folding wagon.
I was thrilled to make what I thought was a smooth bead, but chipped away the slag to find just a mess of tiny metal drops instead of a good join. I had to go over it multiple times!
So far, the best I can do, is weld tiny things, using tiny welding rods. Repaired a shovel. Joined blacksmithed chain links...

Got the battery box problem sorted out, tacked it to the frame then removed the wheels and hard welded the battery box frame and other elements that I had tack welded previously. After that I cleaned up the welds and I then made a grain-free but gluten-full pizza for the crew's lunch.

I really like the tacks that I did on these corner pieces. The layout is very attractive. And they just pop when wire brushed.

Did some practice welding before getting to welding the face joints on the frame. Started by tacking the angle iron to the frame to help stabilize the joints while they are welded. Mitigates the movement of the metal from the heat. Then I tacked the 1" tubing and then did beads all around on both faces. Capped the ends of the long 1x2 with flat bar. Followed up by grinding the welds flush to the tubing. #welding #welder #fabrication #fabricator #beetlebike

Found this in an abandoned cabin in the woods near my house. The piece that allowed the candle holder to mount to the bracket was broken off. My friend ground down the threads on the hex bolt and I tack welded it to the candle holder. Needs fine tuning to level it out but it will do just fine.

Made some more progress today on the frame. Tack welded only this time so that we can easily correct any issues with the frame should they come up.
It's a real challenge to fabricate on OSB. We should be using a proper welding table with a solid flat top to do our fabrication on. However, our budget does not allow for it.
Next we will build the mounts for the rear wheels, but not until Sunday. taking tomorrow off.

Here are some close ups of the tacks and my best weld. Some were butt ugly and I am going back to fix them, but this one 90 came out perfect the first time!
Like everything, it takes time and practice to make perfect. Eventually, I will be able to run a perfect bead every single time.

@MaryMRedoutey I loved the link. They’re quite pretty and man that’s a lot of work. I got certified as a #welder the summer after I graduated with an #art degree. I only welded for a few years but it paid for a lot of art supplies & trips to Europe to haunt their amazing #museums.
