We went on a short hike above Reichenbach im Kiental, Switzerland. The lighting was very difficult for taking pictures (or the photographer was not good enough), so I had to zoom in a lot to get the (my) best pictures.
Since it won't take long anymore before the snow is fully gone, took the opportunity to take some close-ups from mountains.

Although we knew better, we tried to walk to Usserberg (1592 m) in the Saxettal. After climbing from Saxeten (1102 m) roughly 200 meters we called it quits, as there was just too much snow. We walked back to Saxeten and chose the Saxetbach trail, which still had snow, but was much flatter so it was an easy walk. The fresh air was nice.

View from the Schibespitz (2'060m) towards the Gantrisch (2'176m), Bernese Alps. It is part of the so-called "Voralpen", the most northern part of the Alps. The flatter part of Switzerland is clearly visible.

Eighteen years ago I went for the third (?) time from the village of Brand, via the Oberzalimhütte over the Leibersteig to the Mannheimer Hütte.
The second day would go over the Schesaplana to the Totalphütte and from there down to the Lünersee. This two day hike is a classic in my family, but the conditions have been changed dramatically since then because of global warming. The glacier has almost completely disappeared. Increased rockfall also makes the Leibersteig more dangerous.

Fingerpost on top of the Stockhorn (2'190m). After my hike to the summit from Gurnigel, I went down by cablecar, which ends in the village of Erlenbach in the Simme Valley. But there are more Erlenbachs.
The fingerpost points in 3 directions:
- Erlenbach im Simmental (7.2km, 2h40m)
- Erlenbach in canton Zürich (141.7km, 35h40m)
- Erlenbach am Main (464.6km, 132h15m). This Erlenbach lies in Germany

Today was a stunning day. I was in luck that beautiful late summer weather coincided with a day off. Have been saving this local classic Gurnigel - Gantrisch - Stockhorn for quite some time, and today was the day. It did not disappoint.
At first I was a bit anxious though, as no less than 2 full busses drove to the start. Would this be a traffic jam hike? I should not have worried, as I was the only one hiking the route. All the others disappeared into different directions.
The trail to the Gantrisch was easy and shortly before it, I came onto the ridge. I would be on ridges lots of times. One ridge was becoming only 30 cm wide and after checking, it showed I missed a turn (it would be possible though, but as I was alone, I turned around out of safety reasons and found the correct trail).
After an easy climb to Chatz u Mus the final Stockhorn climb came into sight. After summitting I descended by cablecar.
What-a-day!

Today 12 years ago we climbed the Weissmies (4013m) from Hohsaas. It was the first 4000-er of my sister and brother-in-law. Them coming from 2 meters below sealevel only 2 days before, this was quite a feat.
Our guide had the run down from Hohsaas during the night, as his wife was about to go into labour. 😀 🏃♂️
We had to wait on his replacement, who came with the first gondola in the morning. We were therefore a bit later underway than planned.

Day 2: The Grande Dent de Morcles (2'969m / 9'740ft) is a mountain in the west part of canton Valais/Wallis, Switzerland. From the hut it is an easy hike, with the last 150 meters a T5 climb.
The view from the summit is superb. Mont Blanc (when not in clouds) and Lac Léman (which is Lake of Geneva, but let nobody hear you call it like that) can be seen. Not everybody felt comfortable descending via the "Grande Vire" to the Cabane de la Tourche, which is a steep descent with a higher chance of rockfall, so we decided to circle back and take the safer but much longer route to the hut.
We arrived just in time for diner. During our hike we met a German woman hiking alone and it appeared to be her birthday. To celebrate we had a nice bottle of local wine together. It was a perfect end of a long but satisfying day.

Day 1: Jorasse to Cabane du Fenestral. With way better weather than expected we hiked via an alternative way to the Cabane de Fenestral. The views into the Rhone Valley made way to some more rugged terrain. The last ascent to the hut was hot as there was no wind. Enjoying a beer and companions at the terrace hoping the Mont Blanc peeks through the clouds.

The Matterhorn seen from the summit of the Walliser Breithorn (4'164m / 13'661ft). The original plan was to climb Castor (4'226m), but because of a fresh 50 cm dump of snow overnight, we had to change the objective.

Today we partnered up and climbed the Dreispitze (2'520m / 8'267ft) to see the sunrise. I picked my partner up in Interlaken and we drove to the Suld Valley. From there we started at 02:00 and reached the summit a bit early at 05:00. It was chilly, but with good company I was able to bite through. Some pushups were made (not by me), to stay warm.
The sunrise was very nice. The sun hesitated a bit before coming out quickly in full force. After we enjoyed the sunrise we descended and were glad we made the trip during the night. It became already pretty hot.
Thanks for my partner in crime for coming along. Had a great time.

360° windows on FensterFriday. On top of the Schilthorn (better known internationally as Piz Gloria from the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service") the revolving restaurant give you a complete panorama. In this picture you can see the Eiger in the middle, with the Mönch to its right. A bit down you can see the middle station Birg.
Currently the cablecars are being modernized and other construction is also ongoing. Not the best time to go here at the moment (photo is from a few years back).

I have been to the Doldenhornhütte before, but always from the Kandersteg side. Today I went from the Doldenhorn Hotel and this is an even nicer hike up. Lots of shade, but still lots of views.
Went up early, so arrived before the guests who spent the night were already on their way. Had the surroundings to myself. Coffee with a superb "Cremeschnitte".
The view to the Oeschinensee is magical. After a small hour I went down via a slightly different route (but this one was also new for me).
As this hike can be done in about 4 hours, I guess I have a new favorite morning hike.

View from the route to the Rotstockhütte looking up to the Schilthorn, internationally better known as Piz Gloria (although technically this is the name of the revolving restaurant on the summit). From the right you can see the cable car coming from Birg Station.
The name of the restaurant is in its turn taken from the Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969). Piz Gloria is the name of the mountain-top hideout of the villain Blofeld. The production team found the restaurant partly constructed and contributed financially to its completion in return for exclusive use for filming.

Rifugio Tuckett (2'272m / 7'454ft) is a stone (+1) mountain hut in the Brenta Group, Italy.
Weather looks ok on this picture, but we were unpleasantly surprised by a sudden thunderstorm when in the middle of the Via Ferrata Sentiero Sosat. Not cool to be on a steel cable under those circumstances.

Two mountaineers coming over the final ridge to the summit of the Weissmies (4'017 m / 13'179 ft) in Wallis, Switzerland. We came from the Almagellerhütte and after summitting we descended to Hohsaas, the classic route over the Weissmies.
We had a warm night, so the snow above the hut was not really strong and I sank down to my hip frequently (was at the end of the rope, which did not help either). Only when we came up higher, the snow was still frozen solid and we made quicker progress. The normal route is up and down from Hohsaas, but from the Almagellerhütte is definitely a plus.

From St. Anton am Arlberg in Austria it is almost 2000 meter elevation to the summit of the Hoher Riffler (3,168m / 10,393ft), the highest mountain of the Verwallgruppe. A day-trip to the summit is therefore a long one, except when you bike part of the route. We left the bikes at 1,825 meter and went further on foot. Last climb to the summit is tricky, certainly when there is snow. So we left it at that. Descent by bike was fast!

On long multiday hikes the mood sometimes can be at risk. The goto remedy for me is a nice fresh hot coffee. No matter the cold, wind or rain, the mood always immediately goes up. The MSR Whisperlite is my trusted companion in all weather conditions for over 20 years.
What is your moodbooster?

December 2016 was not good for skiing in Berner Oberland, Switzerland. Instead, we chose to climb the Sigriswiler Rothorn (2051m / 6729ft) on the 30th. Good way to end the year with a beautiful hike.

This time not a hiking picture, but one of mountaineering. The picture was taken high up on the ridge from Rothornsattel to Blüemlisalphorn (3660 meter / 12007 ft). Lake Oeschinen (Oeschinensee in German) is seen in the back almost 2000 meter / 6500 ft steep down. August 2010.
