Firevolt Festival, Saturday – Stockport UK

After a mixed night’s sleep we woke up to a 9 degree morning with dew on the tent and grass, after the heat wave we have endured recently we couldn’t believe it. We had our breakfast and went for a shower, which neither of us had to queue up for, everything was really easy at this festival. There were stalls open for breakfast or drinks.

Looking forward to our first full day, we didn’t have to wait too long for entertainment. We headed over to the Small Barn Stage to watch Jam with Jack organised by Jack J Harrison. This was a really fun event where people came from the crowd to play instruments or sing together with Jack to form a band, there were numerous songs played from Guns N’ Roses to AC/DC where two kids came on to play the guitar to ‘T.N.T’, we thought this was an amazing idea as numerous people could come on and showcase there talent and have a great time in front of a crowd.

The Bludsucker Stage called us to see Crowley from Newcastle. They started their performance with ‘Necromancer’ & ‘Silver Star’ where we were blown away by Lidya’s amazing vocals along with the rest of the band’s musical talent and heavy riffs.

Everything was going well until Kim was having issues with her bass but the banned powered through during the problem, Today said “They are the most cursed band in the world something always goes wrong.”, we hope they get better luck at their next show.

Unfortunately this meant their set had to be cut short, but they still found time to play their new song ‘Queen Of The May’, ‘Temple On The Hill’ and our favourite song ‘Pyre’. We really enjoyed Crowley a lot and we hope to see them again in the future.

After a short break we were back at the Trooper stage for Mchale’s Permanent Brew for the most relaxed set of the weekend.

Bringing the blues vibe, performing ‘Don’t Look Down’ and ‘Third Lane Baby Blues’ which really brought something different to the festival. They followed this with our favourite ‘Cafe Bar a Gogo’ which went straight into our playlist.

These guys were fun, making jokes about each other and you could tell they were really enjoying themselves. The crowd, especially enjoyed new song ‘She Loves Me Too’ and they finished their set with a brilliant blues rock cover version of ‘All Along the Watchtower’.

Thieves of Liberty were up next on the Bludsucker stage where there was a lot of love for these guys from the announcer and the crowd wearing their merchandise.

They were full of energy and confidence from start to finish playing songs ‘Too Much’, ‘Calypso’ and ‘Sweet As Today’ with their fantastic stage presence.

During the set, one of the guitarists climbed up the hill to perform and we even had mosh pits. These guys really know how to get the crowd going and they have a lot of fun, finishing with ‘Rabbit Hole’ and ‘Shangri-La’.

Next up the Trooper stage had been taken over by Vikings in the form of a band called LN. Dressed in amazing outfits and make up we knew we were going to be watching one hell of a show.

Opening up with ‘The Slaughter’ and ‘Fenrir’ we were instantly hooked with their heavy riffs and Ellen’s amazing voice. The theatrics led to many a person head banging and a mosh pit, some fans were even wielding prop weapons and thrusting them into the air.

Ellen spoke up about LGBTQ+ saying “Everyone should feel safe, if you don’t then come and see me!” Which proves how inclusive this festival is.

Performing 8 songs in total including ‘Burn the Witch’, ‘Draugr’ and ‘Shield Wall’, where Ellen put fake blood all over herself and moved around like she was possessed.

We loved watching these guys perform and we really hope we get to see them live again in the future. After the show we met up with Ellen, she was really lovely and put fake blood on our foreheads before we went on to buy a patch from them.

Next up on the Bludsucker stage was MuddiBrooke an alternative/gunge rock band from Derby. They played ‘Cellar’ and ‘ADHD’ with the latter being one of our favourite songs of the festival, because it had more of a punk vibe and we loved their energy.

MuddiBrooke continued to entertain with strong vocals and the music to back it up with ‘Liverpool Guy’ and ‘Get Away’. Another highlight for us was their outstanding cover of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ which we reckon you could hear it from neighbouring towns & villages with the way Brooke was belting it out with her strong vocals.

The trooper stage had been transformed! With antiques such as rugs and a clock on stage and even lampshades in the middle of a packed crowd, this was the scene set for These Wicked Rivers another band from Derby.

The heavy blues rock band opened up with ‘Force of Nature’ and ‘Black Gold’ before playing ‘Ain’t No Smoke’ off their new album ‘Fire and Folklore’ which releases on October 2nd.

After playing ‘Evergreen’ These Wicked Rivers’ went on to play their newest single ‘Sing Another Song’ which was an acoustic song with a more country vibe which we enjoyed. After another of their new songs they ended their set with ‘Don’t Pray for Me’.

They really gave us a glimpse of their new album which we predict will be great!

After playing with Renegade yesterday on the Trooper stage, it was time for Darren Wharton to perform with his other band Dare. Darren previously was the keyboardist of Thin Lizzy from 1980 and went on to create Dare back in 1985 where they have released 12 albums.

Dare definitely have that classic rock vibe where the crowd was singing along to their performance of ‘Wings of Fire’, ‘Abandon’ and ‘Into the Fire’ the latter two being from from their first album ‘Out Of The Silence’.

Wednesday 13 brought a completely differnt type of style and energy to the Trooper stage. We were really looking forward to this horror punk band.

There seemed to be a lot of Saturday wristbands around and we think a lot of them came for the day to see these and we don’t blame them. Wednesday 13 and his band came out wearing all black and their spooky makeup. Wednesday 13 said “If you haven’t heard of us before we play songs about death, dying and the dead.”

Wednesday 13 were very good live and entertaining playing ‘Look What the Bats Dragged In’, ‘Good Day to Be a Bad Guy’ and a song from his former band ‘Suicide Summertime’ by Murderdolls which was amazing live.

The Halloween party continued when they bought out a pumpkin full of sweets to throw into the crowd during ‘Haunt Me’. Wednesday 13 was going to celebrate his 50th birthday, Bev came out on stage with gifts, cake and a balloon for him, which was a lovely touch from the Firevolt organisers.

As day turned night we were happy for the sunset as it had been a hot scorching day in the sun, this also meant it was time for the headliner of the day which was Massive Wagons from Lancaster.

Massive Wagons opened up to a massive crowd and came out with high energy opening up with ‘Everywhere We Go’, ‘Fun While it Listed’ and ‘Missing on TV’ giving off a bit of a punk sound which we really liked.

During ‘Fuck the Haters’ the crowd stuck up there middle fingers to the haters, this was followed by a live debut of their new song ‘Story Of My Demise’ which has gone straight into our playlist.

One of the highlights of the day was ‘The Curry Song’ where vocalist Baz Mills shouted “When I say keema, you say naan! When I say rogan, you say josh!” This was great fun with the crowd and we really enjoyed it.

Massive wagons ended a fantastic Saturday of rock with an encore of ‘In It Together’. We made our way back to the tent and hopefully get a better night’s sleep in preparation for tomorrow.

With 33 songs and over two hours of music, Lord of the Lost has written an ambitious trilogy, mercifully spread across eight months rather than released all at once. On Opvs Noir, the band leans into the darker, more gothic aspects of their pop-infused metal, bringing plenty of guest collaborators aboard to keep things spicy. The first two volumes of this opvs have proven a success, with creative instrumentation and an affecting performance from frontman Chris Harms. The question is whether Lord of the Lost can keep up the momentum across another 11 tracks on Vol. 3. The finale of an ambitious project such as this can often feel bittersweet, as it marks the end of something you have (hopefully) come to love, or, like the finales to the Mission Impossible series or Daniel Craig’s James Bond run, it can just be plain disappointing.

Unlike the more energetic, sometimes ostentatious arrangements of the prior two records, Vol. 3 proves to be a much mellower affair. The gothic symphonic elements often pair with softer pop/rock tunes, many of which aim at mood over hooks. Opener “Kill the Lights” starts off with a poppy beat, some cellos, and a growling Chris Harms, and though the chorus might not stick, it’s an overall good song. The moodier pieces don’t always work, however. “The Shadows Within,” which alternates between slower pop and higher energy techno-pop, is largely forgettable. The minimalist finale, “The Days of Our Lives,” serves as a disappointing send-off for the trilogy, though Harms, as usual, makes it worthwhile with his melodic cadence. Though overall less exciting, Vol. 3 does offer plenty of catchy ballads and duets, including “La Vie Est Hell,” performed with departing Kissin’ Dynamite frontman, Hannes Braun.1 It doesn’t do anything fancy, yet I find it often playing in my head on repeat.2

Opvs Noir Vol. 3 does milk some variety out of a couple of pop-related themes coursing through it: empowerment and doomed love. The two most upbeat tunes, “I’m a Diamond” and “I Hate People,” play out as Rammstein techno-industrial pop anthems for people who don’t quite fit in with mainstream society. While “I’m a Diamond” is the catchiest song on offer, the lyrics are a touch contrived.3 “I Hate People” turns the misanthropic-sounding title on its head by directing its ire towards those who seek to force their limited ideology on others.4 Lyrically, the synth-heavy, hip-hop adjacent “My Funeral” is my favorite, containing tongue-in-cheek lyrics where Harms proclaims that “Black is my happy colour” and “I’m gonna, gonna wear / Pink to my funeral.” Rounding out the pop themes are a few love songs, from the Duran Duran-inspired synth pop track, “Square One,” complete with ’80s toms, to a touching duet with Ambre Vourvahis (Xandria). These touches do help keep a rather mild record from growing stale.

While the songs here are well-written, produced, and performed, there’s no denying that it feels as if Lord of the Lost ran out of gas by Vol. 3. The hooks just don’t come as easily, and the lower energy levels feel like a letdown compared to the highs of the first two volumes. One issue is the blandness of the guitars. While creative riffing has not been one of Lord of the Lost’s fortes, they made up for it in the past with more creative arrangements. The generic riffs that fire up on choruses from “The Shadows Within” to “Your Love is Colder Than Death” feel like halfhearted attempts to inject some life into tepid tunes. Much more effective is the penultimate song, “Take Me Far Away,” which ends with an exciting burst of drums and riffs that brings the record to life, albeit briefly.5

This finale ends up bittersweet, feeling more like a whimper than a bang. Yet for fans of Chris Harms and co., it’s not a total loss. Chris Harms is able to elevate even the blandest of tunes; there’s not a single bad song, though many are only mildly enjoyable. Unlike a lot of the dreck that some of the more popular metal bands release, however, Lord of the Lost puts a lot of thought and care into their music, and the Opvs Noir trilogy has plenty to offer those who like their metal less extreme, yet still carrying an edge.
