You CANNOT REVERSE ENGINEER Google's processes from emails disclosed in court. You will learn bits and pieces. RESIST THE TEMPTATION to create your own picture with those bits and pieces. Take this email as an example. The highlighted section says: "Those signals will be very helpful for us to upweighting good, authoritative pages and downweighting the spammy, untrustworthy ones." But read the rest of the message.
It would be challenging to train a Large Language Model on quality scores. They're not words and phrases. They're numbers.
The pretraining process could be used to filter out documents they don't want to use for training, or to ensure documents they want to use ARE included. It could also be used to assign aggregated scores to documents that are chosen for training (maybe the weighting could be used to adjust the weighted averages used to compute the relationships between words and phrases across the body of training documents).
The second paragraph makes it clear they didn't want to directly integrate these signals into the training data.

The latest #Google conspiracy theory - the so-called "default to not index" behavior - was obviously created by someone who doesn't understand how Google and ALL search engines have worked from the beginning.
The Web was always larger than their ability to index it. This problem existed in the 1990s. It persisted throughout the 2000s and the 2010s and it's still a problem in the 2020s.
They have never been able to index the entire Web. And, technically, it wasn't their goal to index the entire Web - but to organize the world's information. They've always eschewed duplicate content.
Search engines purge their indexes and rebuild them on a constant basis. That's never changed.
Google no doubt has tweaked its indexing criteria but they're still including a lot of quickly-generated, low-value content in their index. Some of it even ranks.
Many of the sites complaining about the September 2023 #hcu were, in fact, simply outranked by other content - content that Google forewarned it would promote over more relevant content.

@onreact @rustybrick @searchliaison Half of Jake Boly's problem is that he's relying heavily on social media marketing and Google's current algorithms are rewarding that marketing - especially his parasitical subreddit (which, as I understand it, violates Google's Search Essentials???). So he isn't just struggling against the Helpful Content system - he's struggling against the Reddit spam problem. At least it's relevant for his query. I see way too much irrelevant Reddit crap in the SERPs these days.
