  1. Setting up a #WebForum for the first time in 20 years, and trying to zero in on how I want to guide the community in terms of #CodesOfConduct. Where I'm at so far, is this:

  2. Web forum spambots got smarter:

    - Bypass signup quiz & CAPTCHA with ease (that's old)
    - Lay low, posting LLM answers to old threads, one per day, generally agreeing with everything already said and not attracting attention, but build poster credit
    - Slowly start including links to probe the waters, but those links are to normal, harmless websites
    - Eventually, when established, start posting spam links to whatever they've been set to target:, ads, trojans, political propaganda, etc.

Much harder to detect and easy to slip by in a busy forum. Moderators who do not recognize this pattern will often give them the benefit of the doubt as they made some "real" posts and seem human at a glance.

  3. Considering setting up a web forum for a small community, and haven't installed or run one since punBB ~2006. Anyone have recommendations for options, things to look out for?

Thinking of using an Enhance-based hosting package with 1gb of ram for a containerised site.

    Would like:
    - Members to be able to register themselves (how to deal with bots / spam?)
    - Admin configured tags for posts
    - Doesn't require bbcode etc. for image posting, formatting etc.

  4. Shutting down the web forum I've been running for not quite 10 years now.

Could've coped with increasing hosting costs, spambots and troll factory somehow.

But what killed it is vague, overbearing legal threats from the #UK, a country I left when it drunkenly stumbled out of the EU after too many pints of Ole Tory.

Many web forums are shutting down because of this. One of them explains here: lfgss.com/conversations/401475

Of course it's all "for the children".

  5. More and more #reddit previews stop working these days. Current example: my #RSS #Atom feed aggregator.

I want to emphasize that I've warned about that years ago:

Don't Contribute Anything Relevant in #WebForums Like Reddit, #HN, #Slashdot and for most parts of my arguments even #Lemmy:

  8. 4 years ago, my personal #website, which had the domain name houseoffireseed.ml as I was primarily known as Fireseed back then, launched as just a single HTML page saying this website is live! Then more pages were added. Then the site got a navigation bar. Then the navigation bar became dynamic thanks to @BrailleScreen and PHP. Then there was a #blog, a #WebForum, an #InternetRadio stream, a #Discord server, a new seedy.gq domain name, and most recently, a groups.io mailing list. And that's how my extensive network of sites and services is today! Thanks to everyone who has visited one or more of my sites, listened to my radio stream, downloaded my software, joined my Discord server or any of my other online communities, and supported me in any other way throughout these last 4 years! I didn't even think I'd see this day, but I was recently assured by a good friend of mine, Jonathan Kay, that the server that hosts all this awesome seedy.gq stuff will remain up and running for as long as possible. I'm not sure if you're in the fediverse Jonathan, but if you are, and you get to read this, a huge thank you to you! Here's to 4 more years!

  9. @oatmeal Oh, and I've used that comic strip in my slides of my article about #webforums and gated communities in general: karl-voit.at/2020/10/23/avoid-

  10. I have no idea why people are insisting of using really bad #webforum platforms like #reddit: karl-voit.at/2020/10/23/avoid-

The pure pain when you re-visit a thread and have no idea what you already processed and what not. #UX at its worst.

  11. It seems that I got an unusual number of negative ratings on my #reddit posting in recent days.
This is how I found out that I do care about this stupid karma points too much. Maybe I should look for a browser extension that hides those little pieces of heroin? 🤔
Leaving reddit altogether would be even better but I haven't found a better way of promoting my blog articles to a larger group of people who haven't learned how to use #RSS/#Atom yet. #decentralization #webforum #PIM
