  1. @tyil @kskarthik yeah, "decentralised Internet" sounds like a tautology but it unfortunately isn't 😕

What you're describing sounds like (and I'm all for it)!

(By the way @aral why's that domain redirecting to the Wayback Machine? Interestingly recursive 👀)

    Web...

    #http, #corporations, #evilness

    Small Web: #smol
    #indieweb: indieweb.org
    #web0: small-tech.org

Maybe we should go back to using plain text everywhere over http...

The point I'm making is that there's all these "initiatives", like those I've listed above, all trying to compete for tjhe 0.0.1% of people who might think the same, but there's no cohesion to any of it.

Which I think is the thing which is missing...

  5. Whoever Geoffrey Callaghan is (irishgeoff@…) he has well and truly spammed the web0 manifesto page. (This is _after_ I already removed a bunch of other entries by him and noticed the pattern.) *smh*

(I’m going through and removing any spam entries I find. Going to archive it afterwards.)

  10. Hey, ruricolist isn't on the mastodon, are they? I kinda want to use #spinneret (github.com/ruricolist/spinnere still on github I guess :( ). Does anyone else have any strong html generator feelings? #commonLisp #webdev #web0

  11. So far, I have been delving into the #Web3 and #crypto debate only superficially, as the very few notions I got led me to abhor any kind of technology related to the #blockchain.

Since I started my new job at @dweb, though, I am finding myself revisiting my position by deepening my knowledge on the topic. I am mostly drawing the same conclusions—crypto is terrible—yet I am glad I am learning more also on what I am very critical about.

I am particularly thankful to @mai for writing this article, which I believe is a great starting point to develop an informed opinion.

Above all, as mai points out, nothing is all-bad, and there are for sure ideas and practices that can be learned (as cautionary tales in the worst case scenarios) even from problematic technologies, communities, and/or founders.

#Web0 É un portal web que converte webs complexas, con cookies, publicidade, etc, en páxinas webs sinxelas, lixeiras e limpas, tipo #smolweb .

Vas a web0.cc/ , pegas a URL da web que queres simplificar e listo.

  16. New paint on an old instance; time for an #introduction.

    Hi there! I'm a #verbose #millennial #technologist from #texas.

I'm #political, value internal consistency in #ideology, been involved in #activism most of my life, and have been criticized as an #idealist and #optimist.

Beyond what's in the profile, my jams are:
    - #games (#VideoGame, #BoardGame or #TTRPG)
    - #teaching, #learning, #neurology, #language
    - #web0, #FOSS, #cybersecurity
    - #music, #modular

  17. Here's the result of yesterday's shenanigans by the way. Minus the game which I haven't made yet. Still working out how to do that. 😅

    web0.halotroop.com/

Nevermind the factual accuracy of the page. It's more of a lorem ipsum text. I'm planning to rewrite it with something more interesting later.

  18. The experience of changing web host is a good reminder of why normal people just post to Medium, Facebook or some other system they have no ownership or control over. If we want people to own their web presence and content, we need better software.

I've tested way too many CMSs, static site generators and web design applications. I typically start by trying to put together a simple page with an <h1> heading, a few <p> paragraphs, and a <ul> bulleted list. It's amazing how many alleged web publishing tools fail this basic test — even ones that want a $79 licensing fee. (I'm looking at you, RapidWeaver.)

Anyway, if your web site doesn't run to many thousands of pages, my recommendation is Publii. <getpublii.com>. It's the only thing I've found that's at least as usable as WordPress, works with commodity hosting, and also generates good HTML, CSS and images. It's free and open source, GPL licensed. #Publii #WebHosting #WordPress #CMS #Web0

  19. It’s fun to watch how people are rediscovering the #smallweb - webrings, RSS, static sites, blogs and such.

  21. If you long for the good ol' webring days, there is OFFICIALLY an old-school #webring for #OFMD fan pages! neorings.org/webring/13

Just click Request To Join Webring, add your site, I'll approve the request, click the Show HTML button, and put the webring HTML on your site! I know the Neocities gays will love this one, but it's not only for #Neocities pages.

(This is literally so new that I haven't even added the code to my own site yet.)

  24. CW: Complaining about web history

The web has had too many damn scripting engines that just completely died off.

I want to make a website that's backwards compatible with a very early browser, and has one game written from scratch on it.
But the only thing shared between a Firefox 118 and RetroZilla 2.2 is JavaScript. And oh no! JavaScript itself is basically an entirely different beast now, with no legacy-compatible libraries.
I'd basically be better off learning to use a dead engine and *emulating it* in newer browsers. Like using Ruffle with the earliest version of Shockwave Flash I can find.
Except the plugins that made that work seem to be lost to time as well??? And the experience would obviously not be up to standard with a modern game framework or engine.

So I'm compromising by making the game only work in modern browsers for now. I'm using Three.js since other things I've tried (like Godot) don't work with my setup.
This goes against my entire philosophy for this #Web0 project.

  25. OSNews has added #gemini output (osnews.com/story/136770/osnews) and I am once again here to say how bad of a format Gemini is even though a low-spec 'Web is a good thing and I wish there was a better format. I've designed one, but gaining traction is a hopeless endeavour: gist.github.com/Kroc/6322deed2 #web0 #smallweb

  26. So after adding the "footer", I've noticed that my website is an accessibility nightmare. Hopefully I've fixed that.

Then I've decided to add ASCII art icons to the remaining sections. So I've spent a lot of time doing that.

Then I've decided it'd be nice if all ASCII icons were actually 10x5, so I modified a few that weren't.

I definitely don't have no talent but I'm proud of it nevertheless. No fancy tools or AI used, just copy-paste from box drawing characters block until it looked fine.

  27. On the Small Web, we don’t care about vertical scale (we’ll leave obsessing over that to the psychopaths that run Silicon Valley).

“But will it scale?” Yes. But horizontally, non-colonially, and without making anyone a billionaire.

    #SmallWeb #web0 #humanScale

  28. By the way, when I say that’s all the code. I mean that’s ALL the code in the whole project:

    github.com/small-tech/nodekit/

Run `nodekit` on that folder, get the result in the browser.

No scaffolding. No configuration. No bundlers.

    #NodeKit #SmallWeb #web0

  29. So I just got this running. This is all the code you need to display a basic fediverse public timeline using NodeKit right now.

(If you remove the CSS, that’s 31 lines. That’s it. That’s the WHOLE APP!) :)

  30. Node’s (experimental) VM Module functionality is awesome. Just rewrote the NodeScript feature in NodeKit to use it (and replace my initial “write to file system and import” hack).

    What’s NodeKit?

  34. I love that NodeKit builds in under half a second thanks to the magic of esbuild. I plan to keep that characteristic as it matures :)

(The web apps you serve with NodeKit have no build stage.)

  36. Hello everyone! Been lurking here for a few days, and now that I've sort of gotten familiar with the platform and it looks like a good place to stay (I've been rather hesitant to try out yet more platforms these days, but the added functionality over Mastodon and Pleroma feels worth it) - here's my belated #introduction note.

    I'm a
#Linux developer - see my profile for my other Fediverse presence - my $dayjob is for a proprietary social media company, and apart from the lack of editing, the only thing I really miss from that platform in #Fediverse platforms is having custom reactions rather than just star/like - and guess I found it here!

    I'm into
#Gemini as well - gemini://tilde.team/~michel/ - and blog on https://michel-slm.name/ ; I might use my gemlog for random musings and re-note them here once I get into the swing of it.

    #web0 forever!
    Thanks to
@amolith for running this - donating to #NixNet is the gift that keeps on giving!
