  8. Your web site might have been BOT-ed!

A number of web sites have experienced intriguing spikes in traffic that seem to originate from bots operating in China and Singapore.

While not posing serious risks, impacts are being felt by people who earn revenue from attracting ad clicks on their websites. “This is destroying my AdSense strategies,” as the affected websites deemed as seen as less desirable to advertisers and penalized by Google.

  10. "In the fourth quarter of 2025, TollBit estimates that an average of one out of every 31 visits to its customers’ websites was from an AI scraping bot. In the first quarter, that figure was only one out of every 200. The company says that in the fourth quarter, more than 13 percent of bot requests were bypassing robots.txt, a file that some websites use to indicate which pages bots are supposed to avoid. TollBit says the share of AI bots disregarding robots.txt increased 400 percent from the second quarter to the fourth quarter of last year.

TollBit also reported a 336 percent increase in the number of websites making attempts to block AI bots over the past year. Pangrahi says that scraping techniques are getting more sophisticated as sites try to assert control over how bots access their content. Some bots disguise themselves by making their traffic appear like it’s coming from a normal web browser or send requests designed to mimic how humans normally interact with websites. TollBit's study notes that the behavior of some AI agents is now almost indistinguishable from human web traffic.

TollBit markets tools that website owners can use to charge AI scrapers for accessing their content. Other firms, including Cloudflare, offer similar tools. “Anyone who relies on human web traffic—starting with publishers, but basically everyone—is going to be impacted,” Pangrahi says. “There needs to be a faster way to have that machine-to-machine, programmatic exchange of value.”

WIRED attempted to contact 15 AI scraping companies cited in the TollBit report for comment. The majority did not respond or could not be reached. Several said that their AI systems aim to respect technical boundaries that websites put in place to limit scraping, but they noted such guardrails can often be complex and difficult to follow."

  20. Helping protect journalists and local news from AI crawlers with Project Galileo – Cloudflare.com

Helping protect journalists and local news from AI crawlers with Project Galileo

    2025-09-23, 5 min read

By Patrick Day and Jocelyn Woolbright

We are excited to announce that Project Galileo will now include access to Cloudflare’s Bot Management and AI Crawl Control services. Participants in the program, which include roughly 750 journalists, independent news organizations, and other non-profits supporting news-gathering around the world, will now have the ability to protect their websites from AI crawlers—for free.

Project Galileo is Cloudflare’s free program to help protect important civic voices online. Launched in 2014, it now includes more than 3,000 organizations in 125 countries, and it has served as the foundation for other free Cloudflare programs that help protect democratic elections, public schools, public health clinics, and other critical infrastructure.

Although we think all Project Galileo participants will benefit from these additional free services, we believe they are essential for news organizations.

News organizations, particularly local news, are facing significant challenges in transitioning to the AI-driven web. As people increasingly turn to AI models for information, less of their web traffic is making it to the actual website where that information originated. Industries, like news organizations, that rely on user traffic to generate revenue are increasingly at-risk.

Allowing news organizations to monitor and control how AI crawlers are interacting with their websites, will help them better protect their content and make more informed decisions about engaging with AI companies. Ultimately, our goal is to provide the tools news organizations need to negotiate fair compensation for their work.
