  1. Data Accumulates: An Ancient Observatory's Enduring Task

Blue Hill Observatory near Boston has logged weather data for 141 years straight since 1885. This data helps the National Weather Service and climate researchers.

  2. Fairbanks 55 years ago today (June 15) the temperature reached 96F (35.6C). This is the highest (reliable) temperature on record in Fairbanks. The same day the NWS cooperative station at Richardson (between Salcha and Delta Junction) reached 98F, which is the highest undisputed temperature in Alaska. The official Alaska record high temperature is 100F at Ft. Yukon in June 1915. #akwx #Climate #WeatherHistory #Alaska @Climatologist49 @anisian @CarrieinFbx @mivox

  3. Is today's weather unusual? This is something I ask frequently, but I don't have a good way of answering it. I can easily find the average and record temperatures, but that doesn't tell me too much. I am looking for a measure of how today's weather values compare to the expected distribution. It could be as simple as the average and standard deviation. Do you know of any tools that have this kind of information?

  4. The thought of smashing pressure records for my weather-focused story is so, so tempting...and, come to think of it, quite sensible...

  5. Worldbuilding for 2045's weather in my story, the year leading up to the Christmas superstorm will be a suitably ominous record-breaker...

  7. Pittsburgh's longest stretch of consecutive days with no precipitation was 26 days, from Oct. 14- Nov. 3, 1874. Here is a newspaper article from The Pittsburgh Daily Commercial on the event. #WeatherHistory

  8. It was #OTD in 2001 that the central North Slope coast chilled in lowest (low elevation) temperatures so late in the season in #Alaska. The low temperature of -11F (-23.9C) at the Colville Village cooperative station north of Nuiqsut is the latest date in the spring with a not only with a temperature below -10F but also below 0F anywhere in Alaska (again, low elevation).

  9. Dear #ClimateDiary,
Yesterday (May 11th) is the earliest date in year with a temperature of 85F (29.4C) or higher anywhere in Alaska. On May 11, 1995 quite a number of climate stations in central & eastern Interior Alaska reached that threshold, with the highest reliable temperature of 88F at Fairbanks Airport. That turned out to be the highest temperature of the year. #akwx #WeatherHistory

  10. 15 years ago, a huge snowstorm buried most of Ohio over 2 days. Snowfall of 10 to 20" was common with over 24" in NE Ohio. This storm came only 2 days after a damaging ice storm struck parts of NE Ohio. See our webpage to learn more! #WeatherHistory storymaps.arcgis.com/stories…

  11. It was #OTD in 1947 that Snag, Yukon Territory (near modern day Beaver Creek) reported a low temperature of -81F (-62.8C), which still stands as the lowest official temperature in North America. To the west in Alaska, Tanacross reported a low temperature that morning of -75F (-59.4C), which is the Alaska February record low temperature.

  12. Fairbanks #OTD in 1934 marginally came out of the most severe cold snap in community history*. Four straight days, January 12-15, saw temperatures stay in the 50s and 60s below (Fahrenheit). During Jan 1934 there were a total of 39 hours with temperatures of -60F or lower over five separate days. #akwx #weatherhistory
*Cold snap in January 1906 was likely as extreme but no mechanism in use at the time to measure high temps below -39F (freezing point of mercury).

  13. In Fairbanks, #Alaska 61 years ago today it was really, really cold: high temperature -55F (-48.3C), low -62F (52.2C). Many people who lived through this ranked this two-week cold snap as most extreme in post WW2 era (worse than Jan 1971 & much worse than Jan 1989). The forecast in the News-Miner headline here turned out to be wildly wrong. The temperature warmed 40ºF the next day and to above 0ºF on New Year's Eve. #akwx #weatherhistory #cold @CarrieNash @tania @ANC_Historian @Climatologist49

  14. It was #OTD in 1970 that Prospect Creek (northern Interior #Alaska) reported a low temperature of -62F (-52.2C). This is the lowest (probably) reliable temperature on record in Alaska in November. #akwx #weatherhistory @Climatologist49
