Yikes, a coworker told me that a family member woke up to find that he was paralyzed from the waist down. He was brought to the ICU and has been told that he will need to retrain his brain to rebuild his synaptic knowledge of basic movement, like how to walk.
This was the result of a Covid infection. Anyone who thinks Covid is no longer dangerous is very mistaken. Covid is still causing brain damage.

Sadly, they're reporting 5 #COVID deaths the week ending May 2, so we can't say there were zero deaths in #NYC in April. But there were zero #COVID19 deaths for four straight weeks, from March 29 through April 25!
COVID cases are also down below 8 per lakh per day, the lowest in three years. #RSV and #flu cases are all down as well, though they're not yet at the summer baselines yet!
#COVIDIsNotOver so I still #WearAMask in pharmacies, doctors' offices, hospitals and nursing homes!

Back to the same doctor as last week. But where last week's visit was in and out, this time there was a 35-minute wait until I got in to see the doctor. And it was a busier day, with a dozen patients in the waiting room, none masked. #CovidIsNotOver
There's still the sign saying staff is required to be masked. I went into the bowels of the busy building for my test, encountering a lot of people. Compliance was bad:
2 receptionists + 10 nurses + 3 doctors = 1 mask
Exactly one nurse had a blue surgical mask on. #WearAMask

My past 1.5 hour with client for her 2 hospital appointments have basically been spent in hallways/waiting rooms & reminding staff they can't come near me or my client without wearing a mask. I've had to remind my client that she doesn't need to thank me, multiple times for being vigilant about keeping her safe. Just because some folks are terminally ill - it doesn't mean anyone has the right to rob them of living out the rest of their lives, as safely as possible. She's still has 1/4 of bucket list to check off & I'm helping her make that happen.
Every one has the right to demand masking from health care staff. Don't let eugenics enablers convince you otherwise.

Just a reminder that humans still have the most vulnerabilities.
You might be worried about that zero day Windows or Linux scare which was found by some bullshit AI and released without giving the devs some time to patch it out first, but humans can infect one another with potentially life-threatening viruses just by being in the same (confined) space as one another.
If you'd only pay as much attention to that and wear a mask while out in public...

Well well well. I am getting asked about Hantavirus now by people who stopped paying attention to Covid a long time ago.
They are very worried. I tell them, "I hate to break this to you, but there are other things still going around that you should be more worried about."
They know that I'm still wearing masks, so they ask where they can get those. And they want to know about "good" masks. And how they work, and how often to change them.
I tell them that I haven't been sick since 2019. They ask if I've had Covid, and I say "Not that I'm aware of, but you can get it and not have symptoms." Then they tell me about the "one time" they had Covid, because their Covid brains have made them forget about all the other times that I've observed them getting Covid, and the multiple times they told me themselves that they had Covid.
Then they pause and fall silent. I worry that telling them they should be more worried about Covid will mean that instead of protecting themselves more, they will decide Hantavirus must not be so bad.

Work colleague reports that their kid can barely get out of bed but is going to power through school so they can play sportsball. This was said in the tone of someone doing something mildly naughty, like sneaking in snacks to the movie theater.
Two other colleagues have had unidentified respiratory things for going on over a week.
Surely I am just anxious though.

It's May 7 and #NYC has not reported a single #COVID death in all of April. If we don't get any late reports I think this will be the first month without a #COVID19 death since March 2020!
#Wastewater concentrations for April are in and they're also down, as are case counts for COVID, the #flu and #RSV.
#COVIDIsNotOver and I'll be monitoring the case and wastewater counts. If they start trending up I'll take more precautions again!
And from now on I'll always #WearAMask in doctors' offices!

oh Flex, what could go wrong with a human transmissable respiratory kill-you virus that has no treatment path?
-
RE: https://masto.ai/@justyourluck/116533207767017445
Not covid. its a different virus, Deadly at 40% death rate (depending on variant). This is human transmissible Andes version or a variant of it . I predict it is not good and that #Facebook will be publishing posts very soon that its not a problem. The same people who said covid was just the flu. While they raked in millions on clicks. #WearAMask

Respirator masks like N95s will prevent hantavirus infection.
Clean air will drastically reduce hantavirus spread.
We already have the tools, people just need to use them.
Public health requires everyone’s participation.
“You do you” gets people killed

Airborne & contact precautions until proven otherwise is prudent.
Anything else is pissing in the wind.
Except, that would be more sterile than whatever this shit is.

Another doctor's appointment — isn't getting old fun? — and this time there's a sign by the receptionist's window, saying that staff will be masked when interacting with patients.
3 nurses + 2 receptionists + 1 doctor = 0 masks.
The sign also requested that patients mask. I saw four other patients, none of them masked. It is to sigh. #WearAMask #CovidIsNotOver
