  2. Gary with a really concise segment on wealth tax:

    youtube.com/shorts/V2M0_T-l2LE

It really does seem like one fundamental choice: As per Gary, either people with wealth and power taking all the rest from the less powerful, or (if these are the words) democratizing power/wealth via the right taxes.

(And will Labour finally listen and save the UK... I feel like Starmer maybe has a moment of opportunity here.)

Six months ago #oligarchs were bellowing their intent to up-sticks from #NYC and get as far away as possible from the #MetGala should #Mamdami get elected. I’m sure some will leave in a snit, but I’m yet to see any reportage that aligns with last year’s #billionaire bluster

For those that choose to stay and don’t want to pay taxes on their luxe apartments, selling is always an option. Proceeds can be rolled into hotel stays instead. This is not complex

  5. I wonder if we’ll look at this year’s #MetGala as some kind of tipping point?

The gushing #billionaire owned press foist fawning imagery on us normies. It all smacks of the self absorbed Capitol Elite at the center of the #HungerGames.

Is this the year when backlash coalesces? Where the 99% say enough and demand a #WealthTax?

  6. He owns so much, he will almost make up for it from investment returns by the end of the year. We could do this yearly and he wouldn't ever notice or be poorer.

  7. The 1% wealthiest people, globally, equals 80 million people. Collectively, they consume 10 times the resources(carbon emissions as a proxy for all resources) of the other 99%.
Correcting inequities in the distribution of food, shelter, health care, education, etc we could offer a decent life to everyone,(including the 1%) but we have to “bell that cat”.

  8. I saw a meme post on Facebook suggesting that no one earns a billion dollars except by wage theft, that no one works a billion times harder than other hardworking people who make ordinary wages. That seems a fair claim. I wrote this next paragraph in response, kind of as a spur of the moment thought, but it's something I want to spend more time thinking about:

I used to think that one solution to this was the practice of asking CEOs to not make more than some fixed multiple of their lowest-paid employee. But now I see the goal is to not employ anyone either. A lot of the benefits for corporations are justified on the idea that they employ people, so helping them helps people. Now that this assumption is on a path to being increasingly violated, we need to reconsider our special treatment of corporations as well.

  11. …A rough guide to overshoot:

The richest people have contributed the most to destroying habitability. Far, far more than the per capita shown here. And they’ve done that for everyone, including themselves.

When shall we rein them in?

  12. The latest court ruling against Gina Rinehart (she has to pay hundreds of millions in royalties to her late father’s business partner’s heirs) is a perfect window into how inherited wealth works in Australia.
Rinehart has topped the rich list for six years straight – $38.1 billion in 2025. This payout won’t dent her spot.
But the case (one of Australia’s longest-running) isn’t even unique: she’s fought her father’s third wife, and still fights her own kids.
The bigger point: Australia’s top 200 richest people now hold $667 billion – 100× the 1984 list, while the economy only grew 15×. Half of them inherited their wealth or will pass it on.
The old saying “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” doesn’t hold – big wealth sticks.
So, is it time for a wealth tax (either annual or on inheritance)? Abolishing inheritance taxes in the 1970s helped fuel this gap. Greens want a tax on the richest 1%, but don’t expect Labor or Coalition to touch it soon.

  13. A$38.1 billion Gina

"The court ruling in Gina Rinehart’s mining dispute reveals a lot about the nation’s inherited wealth. And for the past 20 years or more, she has been fighting her own children in a series of court cases that are still continuing."

"Such disputes over massive inheritances are exactly what would be expected in the “patrimonial” society described by economist Thomas Piketty in his book Capital, a big hit a decade ago. This refers to a society where wealth and social position are dominated by inherited capital, not earned income." >>

Bay Area Local News Matters: Billionaire blitz: Silicon Valley elites funnel millions into key California political contests. “FROM A WIDE-OPEN GOVERNOR’S RACE to a bitter congressional contest, Santa Clara County has emerged as a key battleground in the tech industry’s bid to control California politics — and shield billionaires from a wealth tax.”

  17. Looks like almost no billionaire actually left California because of the proposed wealth tax.

And while some people see Gavin Newsom as a potential opponent to Trump, it is worth remembering that he also seems to be deeply backed by billionaires and opposes the wealth tax himself.

    Just more of the same.
