And who made this observation?
Eric Bischoff.

(For those unfamiliar with him, Bischoff was a pro wrestling promoter in the 1990s. His main claim to fame is the main weekly show for the wrestling company he ran, WCW, managed to beat the WWE in the TV ratings for 83 consecutive weeks.)
And there's merit to the argument.
I mean think about how 24-hour news channels in the US present politics.
There's a clear hero and villain.
It doesn't matter if the crowd cheers or boos, as long as they react.
There's a conflict.
There's stakes.
There's long pieces to camera, where the talent puts their case to the audience in a way that will elicit a reaction.
There's commentators who explain the characters, storylines, and highlight why one protagonist is a heel and the other is a babyface.
(You could take the argument a step further and point out the algorithms on commercial social media apps serve to present politics in a very similar way.)
Now apply that formula for news and politics to an audience that already carries strong racial prejudices.
What you get is Fox News.
It's not by accident either.
If you have a 24-hour news channel that shows a news bulletin on the hour, and the most people will watch for is 60 minutes, unless a major news event is happening.
Present it as pro-wrestling-style news entertainment, and people will watch for hours.
And after 30-odd years, what you end up with is politicians like Trump, who basically act in public life like a pro wrestling character.

Now I'm ready to go when I pick this project back up, and I'm set for both 1997 and 1998! From memory in this era they light a fire under Steve Austin, Bret Hart leaves for WCW, and DX forms! Also the nWo continues to exist, but I don't know WCW (nor ECW) as well yet..!

I read somewhere online that Larry Zbysko constantly over-used "New World Odor" to refer to the nWo. I'm up to late September 1996 and I swear he's said it AT LEAST once a show since the faction debuted..!

I'm half-watching a late 1996 episode of WCW Saturday Night, and the announcers referred to Dean Malenko's father as "The Great Malenko" in a throwaway comment.
I kind of hate that I know that that's the name of an Insane Clown Posse song.

Revisiting this now that I'm up to September 1996: I feel like Nash and Hall are pretty cool, but Hogan is this obnoxious try-hard trying to ride their coat-tails? I've re-soured on him pretty quickly. He's less obnoxious when he's clearly TRYING to draw heat than he was as a face that the crowds hated, at least? Aside from the initial shock I feel like the nWo would have been better off without him so far...

I'm up to the "nWo Sting" moment on Monday Nitro. I feel like without context this would be huge, but even as someone that didn't watch much WCW back in the day I know this is a fake-out. The real Sting hangs out in the rafters for awhile and it leads to the debut of Crow Sting. Even as a WWF kid, I always thought Crow Sting was cool. I look forward to (eventually?) seeing his work in context!

As a kid, I knew Dusty Rhodes as a wrestling-adjacent announcer who was on a lot of the demolition derby and monster truck stuff my dad loved to watch.
Watching 1995 and 1996 WCW lately, I know Dusty is so much more. Mr. Rhodes has also taught me new words such as "clubbering" and I don't know how I feel about this fact.

I've talked before about how watching Nitro and Thunder from 98, especially if you're watching them back to back, makes it more and more apparent how much WCW was coming apart at the seems.
