In 2017, #NOAA and the #AirForceReserve’s #HurricaneHunters stopped by #Orlando, #Florida at #OrlandoExecutiveAirport #ORL. This #photo is a nose-on view of their WC-130J #airplane that flies inside #hurricanes.
Only #propeller-drive #aircraft can operate inside a #storm that severe, so this modification of a cargo #plane serves the role. A special #meteorological #radar is installed in a pod under the starboard wing; the #SteppedFrequencyMicrowaveRadiometer #SFMR, allows the plane to measure surface #wind speeds by using radar on the surface of the #waves.
