Re-doing a #MusicWomenWednesday from 2024, as the video I'd linked to disappeared and I had to grab a new one.
When I was a kid in the 90s, I had a Wax Trax video compilation on VHS that had this great cover of Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight" done by Los Angeles' BRAINDEAD SOUND MACHINE. This was the first way I ever heard this song, and I'm crazy about this version.

listened to miles’s AURA for the first time. almost feels like a novelty album—a thoroughly Respectable euro-chamber outing that happens to have miles davis on trumpet. initially intriguing, but i’m unlikely to give it much thought in future. still, it’s nice to know there’s more than one interesting post-hiatus miles davis album.

an incredible document: 5 LPs of wandering avant-#jazz tracks from Sam Rivers’s Studio Rivbea space in NoHo, emphasis on free-associative logics—social, imaginative, melodic, emotional—so even the further-out abstractions generate pulse with or without beat, and the accessible groove tracks build up a lot of goodwill-capital that the weird ones happily burn and burn and burn.

krautrock noodling for the spaceways, what’s not to love? well *actually*—comparisons to the good ol’ GD don’t seem right to me since the germans (even the groovy ones) tend to favour martial-machinic repetition and the contrast effects it affords over inner-frontier pseudopodia, i.e. even the swing beats on this album feel like oompah music. instead of the flying saucer, the v-2. i could very happily listen to it all day (and not realize it). #waxtrax

Back to back, it was about Front 242 and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Ha. I felt like I was back in 1988. 😃

I really appreciate @robinjames
's work to correct the story of 80s-90s alternative music. Plenty was happening before Nirvana and in places other than Seattle. I'd like to see this more broadly contextualized to encompass the Cincinnati and Dayton club scenes at the time (y'all know I'm partial to the Warehouse, but y'all also know the myriad clubs I'm thinking about).

2000minimannerism at repetitive maxilength, which is what happens when admirably intentioned 2nd-string improvisers' ultimate musical horizon and sole musitech is the Big Crescendo. long stretches sound like funkless Can or slightly grittier Rachel's or TED talk montage underscore: intense, enveloping, didactic. on paper its ambient insistence is me-catnip; IRL its postrock monotony offends me a little.
