Water voles in Britain have been recorded eating 227 different species of plant. These include reeds, grasses, rushes, sedges, roots, rhizomes, bulbs and tree bark. They have been spotted as high as 2.5 metres up a tree.

I love water voles, they're such cute little critters, but they do all kinds of damage to the banks of the drainage reens on the Gwent Levels. The burrowing to create nests and passageways often causes the reen bank to collapse; no wonder the navvies of years gone by persecuted them for ruining their canal banks.
