$650 for something I had not even known was happening. Who looks at the top of their water heater? Eek! The handyman who installed the new plumbing and water heater after we moved in here 4 years ago did NOT know what he was doing. There were many parts he used that didn’t have brass sittings, so there was a lot of rust and corrosion. Thankfully a tech here saw it when he was doing a water heater flush. So 6 months later we went ahead on it.
I just don’t get it how these water heaters are so complicated. This doesn’t look great to me (photos are before and after) but at least we are no longer in danger of crud falling into the tank. Replacement would have been so much more. #Water #WaterHeater #Plumbing If I had a a tip today it is to take a look at your water heater. And yes, this is better handled by a real plumber not a handyman. #TipOfDay

Anyone out there use a heat pump water heater? Our utility co has a $1600 rebate. Rheem 80 ga heat pump only (120V). $2500, but $900 after rebate. Yearly savings makes the turn around time less than 2 years. Seems worth it unless i hate it. Thoughts? #Rheem #heatpump #waterheater

Awesome program in Ventura County!! If your gas water heater has issues and needs to be replaced, this group will lend you a heater until you can install a heat pump water heater (!!!). Heat pump water heaters are much more efficient and save money, and use electricity instead of gas. #waterheater #repair #VenturaCounty

A technician arrived to my 8-10AM #WaterHeater replacement appointment around 10:15 (sigh), hooked up a hose to drain the water heater into a bathtub, and said he has to wait for his colleague to show up in order to proceed. That was 2 hours ago, and he’s been sitting out in his van ever since.
I get it’s a two-person job to haul water heaters in and out, but it’s a good thing I didn’t have, like, any other shit to be doing today…

Not really something I needed right before #Christmas. The Fates are all getting coal in their stockings this year! And instead of anodes, maybe I'll take up sacrificing chickens...

Also decided to replace the electric heating element in our RV water heater. Here’s the old one next to the new one. The old one was working fine, despite its looks, so technically didn’t need replacing but I feel like that buildup must be impacting its effectiveness. The replacement cost $18.
We do replace the anode rod regularly, and scoping the tank looked fine. This is after 6 years of full time use so not too surprising.

Both the plumber and the electrician did not know these existed. They admitted this to me. Pretty sure they didn't believe me at first. Is #GettingQuotesWhileFemale a thing?
I gave them this video that I thought was really helpful.

Considering draining and disconnecting my (methane gas) #WaterHeater for the duration of the #HeatWave. I understand it's unsafe to simply turn it off, because bacteria could grow in the stagnant lukewarm water, but removing the water should eliminate that problem. (Also apparently you're supposed to regularly drain your water heater to remove sediment from the bottom of the tank? Who knew.)
Is this a good plan? Are there major downsides to not having #HotWater, even in dangerously hot weather?
-
Interesting. My water heater died this week (this is actually good news: now for the heat pump one and I can turn off my gas line!1!!).
But I'm chasing down the MassSave paperwork. I have had 2 heat loans from this bank before, so I wanted to give them the heads up on my filing.
Spotted this. I didn't know bike loans were a thing.

First time in my life dealing with a leaking water heater even though I have owned some sort of property for over a decade now.
It was interesting to watch the industry that has formed around this one simple device. The quotes I was getting for a replacement were a bit nuts so I decided to see what it takes to replace it on my own. It's not bad at all. A pain in the ass to lug around 160lbs thing, but otherwise, can be done. This video was excellent:

Ok, so since our #WaterHeater is under warranty that apparently turns into a store credit.
So we’re thinking #Tankless - anyone with comments?I found this site, which I consider a solid endorsement. 😂

How to Get #TaxCredits for #Insulation and #HomeEnergy Upgrades

The #InflationReductionAct is about more than just #solarpanels and #EVs. It can help you pay for that new #waterheater or #frontdoor. -
#heatpump #IRA #waterheater I posted back in April that we replaced our gas water heater with a heat-pump water heater. It's been about 4 months and I can share some results from the switch:
Cost to install: $2400. That includes a new electrical circuit, capping the old gas outlet and exhaust flue, the unit, and the install. We did go bigger, so comparing apples to apples, the cheapest 50gal (190L) gas unit is about $900. Should get ~$720 tax credit from the IRA.

Did the last cosmetic work on the installation of electric water heater in the bathroom.
The power is still not connected properly and is using a extension cord to turn it in an hour before taking shower. Don't have proper cables to add the switch to the side to turn it on and off (don't need to have it on all the time, since I'm alone and 80L hot water is more than enough to shower a couple of times.Still not happy about the wall mount, because I'm not sure if I need to reinforce it more or not. But this is a temporary setup and will be taking it with me when we leave.
The damn thing is really heavy and I'm glad I had the hooks perfectly leveled before hanging it on and fill it with water. Total weight is about 120kg when the container is full.
I'm pretty proud of myself doing all the work alone (with some help from the girls when I moved it up at first).

this morning. in the #shower i questioned myself whether i had turned on the #waterheater, not that i was complaining the water temperature but it wasn’t changing… later i found out, yes, i did flip the switch but its indicator light unchanged. #oops.

I've been meaning to move our house away from using natural gas (i.e. fossil gas) for a while now. I finally invested to replace our gas-heated water heater with a heat-pump electric unit. Purchased the 65 gallon (245 liter) Rheem Proterra model. I had to have 30 amp circuit installed to serve it. With the Inflation Reduction Act, I should get a $600 tax credit next year on this investment.
We now only have the central furnace using gas. -

So, I managed to get the older heating element back in place so we could continue to have water. But I am still unable to replace them. If I am having this much trouble with the top element, the bottom element (where all the sediment and such is) will probably be worse. Looks like we will be speeding up our plans to replace this water heater with a tankless. #homerepair #waterheater

Even after shutting off all water to the house, I can't replace the water heater's heating elements because they somehow warped to the point they can't be removed. Nor can I put the old one back in because the way it warped has cause it to be end heavy and I can't get the freaking threads aligned again. This fix should have taken no more than 2 hours, but I am past 4 hours and I have no way to get water back to the house now. #homerepair #waterheater
