Watching all these youtube videos on water harvesting and creek restoration etc, I really wish people would emphasise more how every SINGLE time the problem was very directly caused by colonialism and the answers were already there in the cultural practices of the indigenous peoples and are recovered by remembering and reviving those.
They mention it at times and it is fascinating.
Wagon ruts cut open landscapes and caused creeks to erode and watertables to drop, landscapes to dry out. Badly built (aka standard) roads still do the same. Obviously overgrazing and clearcutting, common colonial practices, cause immense damage both to vegetation and to water flow and groundwater levels.
But it is nausea-inducing how many times colonial overlords literally mandated locals to abandon or counteract their water-harvesting, water-protecting and groundwater-raising practices. Mandated them to dig drainage ditches that would get rid of all the water instead of capturing and using it. Literally doing and forcing everyone to do the opposite (dig ditches straight down the slope) of what's helpful (ditches or berms on contour/at right angles to the water flow).
