  1. Colorado aquifer depletion triggers heavy metal contamination in rural residential drinking wells

Declining groundwater levels in rural Colorado are coinciding with an increase in heavy metal contamination in residential drinking wells.

  2. #HoldenME - #StreamExplorers Workshop at #FieldsPond

    April 25 from 10:00 am-12 pm

Location: 216 Fields Pond Rd. Holden, ME

    Free, registration required.

"Do you want to volunteer your time to care for your local streams? Do you want to learn more about the critters that live in the water? Come and practice your sampling methods and #macroinvertebrate identification skills at this in-person training workshop. Learn how to sample a stream for science and identify the organisms you find, to help professional scientists monitor water quality. Marsh and Stream Explorers is our community science project featuring #AquaticInsects and what they can tell us about #WildlifeHabitat and #WaterQuality. Educational resources for classroom teachers will be available."

  3. 🌊 New rules to tackle water pollution in Europe — PFAS, pharmaceuticals and microplastics are now in scope. The @europarl_en has voted to strengthen EU water quality. Robust data is what makes policy like this possible. EEA water data: eea.europa.eu/en/analysis/... #WaterQuality

  4. EPA moves to designate microplastics and pharmaceuticals as contaminants in drinking water

But, as #MAHA folks noted: "Maha leaders, farmers and organizations told Zeldin in a letter on Tuesday to tackle the health impacts of pesticides, plastics and Pfas chemicals."

Still, 2 out of 4 is a start (I hope)

  5. Environmental harms and health risks from Iran war could persist for decades

Oil depots spewing black smoke. Debris sinking in the Persian Gulf. Missiles pounding military sites. The Iran war…

  6. River otters are back, and Ohio has led the way. Yes, *that* Ohio:

"Otters are back. And their presence proves something worth remembering. Healing is possible. Ecosystems can recover. The story of the Great Lakes – its waters, its people, its wildlife – is still unfolding."

  7. Oh, look! Another revolutionary idea: use #otters as nature's furry little lab coats to measure water quality. 🌊🦦 Apparently, when they're not too busy being adorable, otters are part-time scientists with a knack for estuarine diagnostics—who knew? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next year, seagulls will be moonlighting as climate researchers. 🐦💼

  8. "About 12 percent of Monterey County’s oil and gas wells are located within 200 feet of a river or creek. This includes the Salinas River, which runs through the San Ardo oil field, and is a critical source of the county’s groundwater.

"In December 2025, over 4,000 gallons of oil and toxic wastewater spilled in the San Ardo oil field, just over a mile from where the Sargent Creek feeds the Salinas River. It is unconfirmed whether that spill was connected to an active or idle well.”

  9. For once I am not going to whinge about the Guardian's (deliberate?) conflation of England and Wales with Britain, but only because water quality is a growing problem across the whole of the UK, albeit worse, much worse south of us. The did get it wrong in attribution though. You always have to filter their stories by recognising that in their eyes, Britain equals SE England.
