But this evening, I finally mustered up all my courage and decided to try to fix it.

Jörgensen Jörgensen, “Dog King" of Iceland, brother of famed #watchmaker Urban Jürgensen, died on January 20, 1841 at the age of 60. A few years earlier, fellow convicts memorialized him, carving likenesses of the king and his queen on the Ross Bridge over the Macquarie River.

I'm waiting for watch parts to dry, so I'm left to sit here and think a bit. It's a relaxing time, and I am grateful I can do this. Thinking about this Seiko I've been wearing a week or two straight now, and I'm wondering if I'll ever get it to keep anything netter than ten seconds. I know it's asking a lot, but it's a fun thing to tinker with. I've got a large collection of watches but, for the most part, I think I'm losing attachment. This is a good thing, as I can try selling those off if/when I can.
I'll say this, a great way to keep a watch fresh in your collection is to swap bands. It helps adjust the look, feel, and feeling it could give you.
I wonder if I'm doing the right thing, or if I'm good enough, if I even know how to do what I want. It's scary but I need to face these questions and work them out.
Just some of the thoughts while my watch cleaner drones on.

New toy in! This is used to lift hands off watches with less (I won't say zero) of a chance of damging the dial! Kind of overkill but I wanted to try it out, better to have it and not needed sort of thing. Should help elevate the work I can do at home though!

Yeah, sure. I'm not saying the customer said this, but I do have people with this attitude frequently enough. I wish I could frame something like this to show every person that thinks their watch is in perfect shape being untouched in however many decades.
What you're seeing here is old oil that has solidified and picked up whatever microscopic bits of debris, and left unchecked this can cause damage to the jewel/pivot. Luckily modern oils last longer and are synthetic so they help keep things in check longer (but still not indefinitely!)

Checking in with the boss this morning. He’s happy with the progress I’ve made on the dial this week. The main dial pattern is sorted, and I think we’ve found a sub-dial pattern both of us are happy with. He is concerned with site security with the delivery people who keep showing up. He likes to yell at them from his chair on the lawn.

When I was installing the privacy film on the door from the shop to the house, the boss insisted I leave a gap at the bottom. He checks up on me from time to time, and is ready and willing to comment on the day’s progress.

On February 4, 1749, English watchmaker Thomas Earnshaw was born. Earnshaw further simplified the process of marine chronometer production, making them available to the general public. He is also known for his improvements to the transit clock at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London and his invention of a chronometer escapement and a form of bimetallic compensation balance.

Us #watch nerds love an open caseback so we can witness the dance of the mechanical movement. But there's something special about a fine watch that hides the movement away, never to be seen by anyone but the #watchmaker. Especially when the movement is refined, decorated, and finished to high #horology standards. I have a few watches like this and I cherish their secrets!

There is no doubt in my mind that the craftsman #watchmaker is an artist. Whether they are designing or finishing the #watch movement or creating the case, dial, or hands they are continuing the tradition of #art in #horology that dates back centuries. This is especially true for the traditional artistic crafts like guillochage and anglage, which are rarely appreciated but truly amazing when done with skill.
