Any ideas for where to recycle old pillows and an old world-map globe? The pillows are stained and dirty and worn out - they're not fit for donation. But I hate to just chuck them in a landfill. The globe can be reused for crafts, apparently, but I don't want to reuse it - I want it out of my house. A #mining company has been #fined close to $221,000 for almost 30 instances of discharging waste into the #environment without authorization in southeastern #BritishColumbia.
On Aug. 8, the #BCMinistryOfEnvironment handed #TeckCoal Ltd. — now operating as #ElkValleyResources — two administrative #penalties based on #WasteDisposal issues over two years at its Elkview operations near #SparwoodBC.
This is not the first time the Elkview #coal mining operations have been penalized for #unauthorized waste disposals. Two years ago, Teck Coal received a penalty of close to $200,000 for several discharges in 2020.
Teck Coal has faced tens of millions of dollars in fines for #contaminating #waterways in B.C. over the years.
It is also now dealing with allegations of dumping harmful substances into waters frequented by fish in the province's southeastern region. #EnvironmentCanada laid five charges against the company in July, and they have not been tested in court.
A court hearing in that matter is scheduled for Oct. 10.

I love my kitchen sink #WasteDisposal unit and, on the assumption that their use must be more environmentally friendly than not, was wondering whether to have a mini-campaign.
Views are mixed on their green-ness, the chief objections being the use of water/electricity, which seems less objectionable than the problems fruit peelings etc cause in garbage piles.
I only use oil for cooking, so there are no solid fats involved.

I don't think this is the right way to frame this problem.
Our first job is to live long enough that such concerns matter. If we don't do something quickly, we won't have that chance.
That's why I also support the use of nuclear where other tech is not feasible. What matters most is to stop fossil fuels.
If solar panels get us far enough to be worrying about how to replace them, or if nuclear gets us far enough to worry about waste disposal, we'll be in better shape than we are now. There are serious short-term milestones we have to hit to avoid both near-term catastrophes of various kinds and falling over tipping points that lock us into long-term problems in nature itself.
I also think this kind of fearmongering is the kind of stuff you expect to see funded by the oil industry as a reason to delay switching. Any reason for delay favors short-term coal & oil profits but not the survival of the human race.
No one promised us that surviving the Climate Crisis would be easy or even without sacrifice or difficulty. This idea that "oops, this has issues" is a reason not to do it needs to be dispensed with. We can't find the right path by disproving all the others. That will find no paths. There will be issues. But the point is to get the big things done and then to address the issues that remain.
