  4. "In Blue," Wassily Kandinsky, 1925.

Y'all know Kandinsky by now. Although often regarded as the first Abstract artist, he's now credited as the guy who popularized Abstract art.

This was one of his early Abstract works, when he was veering away from his time at the Bauhaus and the Constructivist school (now a half-forgotten movement, but with an arresting style). Here he's experimenting with geometric shapes in an abstract pattern, building his personal visual language.

There's shapes that might be a cow and a windmill, and maybe the sun, and possibly a mountain...and is that a scythe over them all? It's hard to say, but there's a jillion ways of looking at it, so draw your own conclusions.

  5. "Parties diverses," Wassily Kandinsky, 1940.

Kandinsky (1866-1944) is regarded as the great pioneer of Abstract art, although we now regard Hilma af Klint as the very first. But he helped define and popularize the style, so his star often outshines hers (unfortunately).

This was painted after he migrated to Paris after the Bauhaus school closed in Dessau, Germany. While there, he drifted away from the rigid angularity of the Bauhaus style and began indulging in more organic forms.

This combines the two; we've got the rectangular areas of color, but joined with amoeba-like forms that swirl around, almost like something in a drop of water, observed by microscope. I've long abandoned any idea of figuring out what Kandinsky was "getting at" in his work....instead, I just enjoy the visual experience. And this is a rather pleasant one, prefiguring the graphic design styles of the 50s.
