Yesterday's #wassailing.
Led by the #Eynsham #Morris, villagers processed through the orchard banging pots and pans to scare evil spirits, and singing to wake the apple trees and encourage them to produce a good harvest.Spicy cider was readily available to everyone present, warmed on a roaring fire. And toast was hung in the trees - a gift for the good spirits. The birds will be pleased. 😀

Buried our Nova beneath 'our' apple tree on Milton Common.
He's with his brothers and they'll provide the nutrients that go into our Xmas cider every year.
So after they've been our pet rats in life, they become the wassail rats afterwards.

This Saturday, January 18, #McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse is hosting its 8th annual #Wassail #Cider Fest, based on the old English tradition of orchard wassailing to “awaken” the apple orchards. Of course it wouldn’t be a cider festival without plenty of cider to drink as well, with over 20 cideries represented and pouring their wares.

It may have been a *little* damp yesterday, but a crowd did turn out for the 2025 wassail, with music and entertainment from Swindon Folk Club and Devizes Jubilee Morris.
What a lovely ceremony - songs, dance, and waking up the apple trees with apple juice and toast! Museum director Mike confirmed we had a lovely harvest last year; let's hope it's the same in 2025.

The type of wassailing still common today takes place in orchards, particularly those growing Apples or Pears. People gather in the orchards to sing and generally make noise. They might bang pots and pans or even let off shotguns. The purpose of this is twofold: firstly to wake up the trees and second to scare away any evil spirits lurking in the branches.
