Here is a portrait of Betha Whitlow, the driving force behind WashU’s Digital Art History Lab (DAHL).
Once a slide curator, she digitized vast collections and helped make her own role obsolete — paving the way for DAHL, which now trains and empowers students in digital art history. Whitlow is celebrated not only for her innovation but also for her mentorship and advocacy for staff and students alike.

As #WashUAlum🐻, it's an incredible honor to give GI Grand Round as visiting professor at #WashU. Extra special to speak in the room named after my first clinical research mentor Dr. Ray Clouse, who introduced me to the field when I was a med student & inspired me to become an investigator.
Thank you for the wonderful day. It was amazing to see old friends and to meet the fellows & faculty. It will always be special to be back❤️

This will be *fun*: got an email from administration this morning touting "a new look for WashU", and already the university homepage redirects from wustl.edu to washu.edu. The FAQ promises that email addresses and everything else will be switched over the next few years.
A whole lot of accounts, links, etc. will be breaking; changing URLs every few years is ridiculous. (My email was artsci.wustl.edu, is now wustl.edu, and apparently soon washu.edu.)

"Asia in St. Louis" began as a community-based learning course from my colleague Prof. Ulug Kuzuoglu; it is now housed at #WashU libraries, and contains information, stories, and reflections on the role of #AsianAmericans in #StLouis

(Hopefully final) #WashU wall update: the fences are now gone as well; everything was normal on campus today. No communication from administration since graduation.
I don't know what's happened to everyone previously suspended; hard to find out now that the Riverfront Times is closed. https://www.stlpr.org/2024-05-22/rft-sold-riverfront-times-rip-alt-weekly-staff-laid-off

Apparently #WashU did reply to the #StLouis city government:
'The aldermen have proposed a resolution condemning the university’s response to last month's protest ...
Aldermanic President Megan Green, who was at the protest and was among the faculty members suspended ... said the letter from the university raised further concerns.
“They're defining any subject matter that makes them uncomfortable as being violent,” she said. “And that's very problematic.”'

' “The use of suspensions is sort of one of the primary tools of private universities ... It's what [the] general counsel tells universities to do,” he says. “Put folks on paid suspension, make the process as vague and complicated and endless as possible, and in the meantime, we'll figure out what the next steps are. And hopefully some of these people will just go away.” '

At least #WashU matched the fence/wall tarp to the color of the "in St Louis for St Louis" marketing banners. /s
I took this picture today, three days after graduation. No ID checkpoints, but only a few gaps in the fence, some of which were watched by radio-equipped "event staff". Very quiet on campus, few people around. No idea how long administration is planning to leave the walls in place.

Different approaches, indeed.
"The protest ... went off largely without incident—a marked contrast to what happened over the weekend at Washington University ... St. Louis University officials took a different approach on Wednesday. The police presence was fairly light, and demonstrators could move about campus without any resistance from law enforcement. Police shut down part of Grand Avenue while students sat in the street listening to speeches."

@nix That's quite a nice contrast to what happened at #WashU Saturday! And Grand is not a small side street; I'd guess that was rather more disruptive than people on campus on a weekend.
Does that mean the county police were at Washington University? Or were both #STL city police but asked to do different things?

#WashU Law School faculty, students, and alumni issue open letter condemning the #university's violent and unwarranted response to peaceful #protest in support of #Palestine:
“Resorting first to heavy-handed enforcement tactics, rather than engaging in discourse, is antithetical to the core purpose of education. It erodes the foundations of a healthy democratic society.”

@janhoglund Sarah Kendzior's entire post is so heartbreakingly open and honest.
"I covered the Ferguson protests ten years ago. I am used to seeing innocent people beaten and arrested in St. Louis. I am not used to seeing it happen at Wash U.
But if there is a definitive story of the past decade, it is how the net of oppression has widened. Whether through covid, climate change, or the loss of hard-won rights: we are all targets, we are all disposable."

The #protests aren't malicious and violent. The overwrought and intellectually dishonest administration response is. The protesters were nonviolent members of the #WashU and #StLouis communities, who are now banned from campus, with faculty forbidden from contacting students as if THEY were the threat to students' well-being. It was the admin's decision, not a student demand, to evacuate the library. The buildings on campus are still locked.

Letter from #WashU faculty, staff, and graduate students denouncing the Chancellor's extreme response to and intellectually dishonest characterization of a protest in solidarity with #Gaza. Despite pieties about peace in his initial October email, the Chancellor has refused to even acknowledge the Student Union's resolution calling for #divestment from #Boeing.

CW: sending the wrong signals about covid
I'd noticed the free mask container at the entrance of the #WashU psychology building has been empty for a while; evidently masks are no longer needed, or else why would they have removed the container? (sarcastic, #CovidIsNotOver)
They were just blue surgical masks, but still a reminder, and a sign that masking is ok. I regularly saw folks pick up a mask and put it on; sometimes upon entering the building, but also if they started coughing during the day.

US human-subjects researchers: participant gender-related info is now extra sensitive.
Last summer I posted (linked below) about my (successful) quest for confidentiality guarantees from #WashU, and how we changed our screening questions to have pregnancy in an "any of the above" list, rather than separately.
Unfortunately, we now need to treat some gender and relationship-related data with the same heightened caution.

Last Friday I (and everyone else at #WashU?) got an email from #box announcing "The all-new Box AI." The university box storage is described as #HIPAA compliant and encrypted when stored (https://it.wustl.edu/items/box-summary-of-terms-and-conditions/), which sounds good.
But the "related to providing file storage services" restriction sounds like it would allow #BoxAI, since that is described as improving access to the institution's files stored in box. (https://www.box.com/ai). I'll be asking our IT for clarification.
-
@debruine @hedgielib Just the phrases "Box AI" and "content cloud" makes me wonder how HIPAA-compliant box actually is. Maybe they argue info becomes de-identified when crawled by a LMM?
The email link isn't informative, just to an event (https://events.box.com/content_cloud_summit_2023). Anyone know more? I'll dig in a bit next week; we have sensitive research data on box that I thought would be ok based on #WashU 's contract with #box.
