US in advanced talks with Denmark for three new military bases in southern Greenland
The United States has been conducting closely guarded, regular negotiations with Denmark to establish three new military bases in southern Greenland. According to sources, the bases would be designated as American sovereign territory and primarily focused on surveillance of Russian and Chinese maritime activity in the GIUK Gap.
The US currently maintains only one base in Greenland — Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule) — down from around 17 during the Cold War.
The discussions aim to strengthen the US presence in the Arctic amid growing strategic competition in the region. Denmark has signaled openness to additional US bases but has rejected full territorial cessions.
