  2. CW: NZPol Maori Ward Bill - Select Committee query

Has anyone here who lodged a submission on the Māori wards bill and asked to be heard been allowed to present their concerns to the 'Justice' select committee. I asked to be heard, have heard nothing? Is the same stunt as happened with the evil Fast-Track Bill happening here -- denial of right to speak to the Select Committee. #WarOnDemocracy #NZPol

  3. @knittingknots2

    From the NBC story (nbcnews.com/politics/2024-elec):

"When reached for comment on the image in the video, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said, "That picture was on the back of a pick up truck that was traveling down the highway.""

As evident from the image in Vance's piece this is a lie. It's a full screen image of the President, and it's very recognizable what it is. By deliberately straining deniability they are proving they are beyond accountability.

Still not something the New York Times thinks is news. Can you imagine if this was reversed and the President did something like this? No, you can't because he never would, and the media's heads would explode if he did.

Edit: It's an old saw, but when the media does not express collective outrage to such outrageous behavior it normalizes it and desensitizes the public to it.

Another installment of the war on democracy, brought to you by the GOP.

  6. Once you decide to be a defender of democracy instead of a scared rabbit this one is simple:

RNC weighs limiting NBC’s access at this summer’s convention >>> politico.com/news/2024/03/28/r

NBC should just call their bluff, and say OK, if we don't get full access we won't cover your convention at all.

AND the other networks should back them up and tell the RNC that everyone gets full access or they aren't covering it either.

    Enough of this garbage!

  8. "But this bombshell has drawn a good deal of attention... "On Sunday, Budoff Brown reached out to McDaniel’s aide and former chief of staff at the R.N.C., Richard Walters, to see if there were any friends or colleagues who could speak up on her behalf.""

"...staffers inside NBC News are enraged at the fact an executive would have engaged in such behavior."

  9. The NBC Ronna McDaniel matter is not over, and nor should it be. As the details emerge, the rot and institutional disregard for the truth at NBC becomes more apparent.

New McDaniel revelations have ‘enraged’ staffers >>> rawstory.com/hunger-games-at-n

"The Comcast boss is watching an unceasing five-alarm fire rage at 30 Rock, scarring the reputation of NBC News and threatening to consume multiple parts of the Cesar Conde-run NBC Universal News Group."

Wonder when we will see a NYT Opinion piece on the popularity the prospected program to shoot journalists, and why that is bad for Biden.

  11. @uspolitics

It's not insane, but it is incredibly dangerous. By decimating objective truth and replacing it with his unreality he binds them to himself as the arbiter of everything. An omnipotent ruler incapable of error because he creates his own actuality. They accept that whatever he says is fact. This is what the most extreme cults do.

    #WarOnTruth #WarOnDemocracy

  12. @jeffjarvis

It's infuriating. The both sides normalization instinct is so ingrained in these terrible excuses for journalists. The question to ask these ding dongs is, "How do you view your job? Are you prepared to be a defender of democracy, or are you simply here to report on its demise? If you don't have the courage to speak truth to power, you are in the wrong profession."

  13. @rbreich

Since Trump intends to end democracy once in office, the corollary here is that the billionaires are funding a war on democracy with the intent of transforming the US into an oligarchy.

  14. @samlitzinger

Very true. Though Rosen says the media is getting better about identifying untruths. The more sublet point is that they still report these untruths, albeit as untruths, but in so doing normalize dishonesty as a viable political strategy. The net effect is still to abdicate their role as defenders of the truth and by extension as defenders of democracy.

  15. NYU Journalism Professor Jay Rosen is one of the smartest people on the intersection of media and politics. A couple days ago he was interviewed for this podcast about the NBC Ronna McDaniel matter: newrepublic.com/article/180118

This highly recommended discussion, which could be co-title The War On Truth, is essential to a broader understanding of the media today as it tries to apply normal methods to a candidate and party that fundamentally play by different rules.

  16. So, now in order to get a job at the RNC, you need to agree that the 2020 election was stolen.

    politicalwire.com/2024/03/26/a

Makes sense. Election denial is a prerequisite for becoming a soldier in the war on democracy.

On the surface we might think, of course that's what an insurrectionist's party apparatus would demand, but think about the implications of a national political party requiring the denial of facts, truth and verifiable reality and where this will inevitably lead.

Hopefully, this is turning into a teachable moment.

「A loud reminder to stop calling Xi Jinping 'president.' Call him 'chairman' (主席) or 'general secretary' (总书记). That is what the Chinese call him. Calling him 'president' in English is both inaccurate, and it normalizes his authoritarian rule.」

  21. ☝️「Conclusion

State-sponsored cyberattacks present exceptional risks to individuals, organizations, and nations. These adversaries, backed by substantial resources and strategic interests, employ their technical expertise to wreak havoc on a global scale.

The surge in state-sponsored cyber activity, targeting critical infrastructure, has been a cause for concern, with alerts rising from 20% in 2021 to a staggering 40% in 2022. Nations such as Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea have actively pursued their agendas, displaying audacity and aggression in their cyber operations, with motives of espionage, political manipulation, economic gain, and military advantage.

  22. 💯📜 Geopolitical era is worse than a new cold war

The liberal toolkit didn’t just fail to change the dictators. It’s now being weaponised against the West.
    By Misha Zelinsky

「In 2000, then-US president Bill Clinton declared that alongside free trade, “liberty will spread by cell phone and phone modem”.

Twenty-three years later, the results are in. And they’re not good.

Thanks to free markets, dictatorships are far richer and technologically advanced than during the Cold War. Meanwhile, digital tools have perfected the evil arts of censorship, surveillance and oppression.

But the liberal toolkit didn’t just fail to change the dictators. It’s now being weaponised against us.」

「The stark reality leaves free societies facing a series of wicked dilemmas. Should we help the Chinese Communist Party become rich given its ambitions for global totalitarianism? Do we care if Russia becomes a client state of China? Should these dictatorships enjoy access to global information systems given their record of hacking and disinformation?」

  23. Defending democratic values should not be merely reactive but *proactive*.

How is e.g. trade being used to strengthen developing and other fellow democracies while *not empowering* regimes hostile to #democracy and #humanrights?

How about #media? Hostile states have full access to promote their propaganda globally, even if they deny democracies the ability to address their captive subject populations. Or those subjects' ability to even communicate among themselves without tight regime controls.

  24. 「TheFP: Help us understand the seriousness of the situation. You published a piece the other day in The Times of London asking: will there be a World War III?

Niall Ferguson: Well, we’re already in a cold war with China. The thing about cold wars is that they’re not entirely cold. In the first Cold War, it became clear that the stakes were high when a hot war broke out in Korea. A hot war broke out in Ukraine that I think played the same role in Cold War II. Cold wars are global. You have to contend with multiple regional crises. We’ve got one in Ukraine. Now, we’ve got one in the Middle East. It’s conceivable we could have a third in Taiwan if China made some move taking advantage of the fact that the U.S. and its allies look increasingly overstretched.

If you find the terminology of World War III alarmist, as some people do, I would merely point out that the objective of Russia is to wipe Ukraine from the map, the objective of Iran and Hamas is to wipe Israel from the map, and the objective of China is to end Taiwan’s democracy and autonomy. And if the United States fails to prevent those things from happening, we will be in as dark a situation as the world was in in the late 1930s when the totalitarian regimes were able to change borders with an utter disregard for international law. So it’s a bad situation.」
