🇳🇴 Good news! Norway brings back the right to pay in cash 💰 in more places (anywhere stuff is permanently on sale, essentially)! Before, shops and service-providers could opt out of accepting cash. One example is the hotel in Oslo I sometimes crash, where drinks and snacks can only be paid by card (or #Vipps, I guess).
Perfect timing with the "Apagón" in Spain earlier this week!

I sent a p2p transfer (“popmoney”, iirc) for a few hundred to pay for hardware. A couple days later I got a voicemail demanding I call a security office. They interrogated: what are you buying - what is your relationship to the seller - /why/ are you buying it - … After answering the questions it took a day or two more for the transaction clear.Postal workers don’t nanny us. They never stop and ask: what is in this envelope, what are you buying, etc. They do not peek inside the envelope.
USPS is mass scanning envelopes. But that metadata is still less intrusive than all the intermediaries and outsourced 3rd parties who snoop on every electronic payment to feed the aggressive appetites of Amazon and Google to track offline purchases (to trace online ads to offline transactions). #Paypal stole money from me. Waited till I funded an account then demanded ID. Then ignored the scanned ID card I gave them. Kept the money. Since Paypal is not a bank, they escape banking regulations.
Forced banking is becoming a reality as banks become increasingly intrusive. Most electronic payments are dysfunctional without a bank account. But cash does not discriminate against the unbanked. Cash does not feed the banks which invest in fossil fuels and private prisons. And cash does not nanny ppl. Recall that paypal, visa, mc, and amex blocked payments to wikileaks. Cash was immune to that nannying and abuse of power. What happened with Wikileaks foreshadows the dystopia ahead of us. That abuse happened when cash was still an option.
Just wait until cash is gone.. the banks will have a blank check on their control over us. We need something like 5% of the population to use cash for everything, to actively protect it from the #WarOnCash.

@JustOneMoreThing too late for me to vote but my answer would be /most of the time/. When cash is refused, I dig my heels in and insist on cash payment. To protect the cash option amid the #waroncash.

@boltx The paper concluded a difference of a few orders of magnitude, which would not be minor. The new PoW algos would not be able to compete with PoS on energy, but PoS cannot compete on other factors like balance of power and requires a bit more trust iirc. So on a PoS chain, wouldn’t you have people hoarding large amounts of coins and just sitting on them? That seems to drive the currency to be used as an investment when really we want it to be treated like a currency.
They both have their place and the extent of PoW energy demand is always way overblown. It’s not a significant climate factor.
OTOH, banks invest in fossil fuels with reckless disregard. The #WarOnCrypto and #WarOnCash together culminate into Bill Gates’ wet dream: forced banking, which IMO would be the greatest dystopia. We may not be able to stop the elimination of cash but should cling to PoS and PoW to the extent needed to avoid forced banking.

Sadly, ATMs are becoming hard to find in #Belgium. They are also becoming centralized so one single ATM vendor will eventually be able track everyone’s cash withdrawals in one place. #WarOnCash #privacy #antiTrust

Check your laws first, of course. #Belgium is a good place to do this because #cash acceptance is an obligation that many #Belgian companies are ignoring. I’d love to see a map of where cash acceptance on debts is obligatory. #warOnCash
