    Our latest blog post dives into this curious comparison, inspired by a keynote from Caroline Muller (ISTA) on #MesoscaleConvectiveSystems, delivered at the WCRP Global #Hackathon.

    Held in May and co-hosted by #nextGEMS, #EERIE, and #WarmWorld, the event gathered over 600 climate researchers worldwide to explore cutting-edge science through open #collaboration.

  2. 📣 Our #nextGEMS hackathon legacy just went global! 🌍  From May 12–16, over 600 people joined the first-ever global climate modeling hackathon, co-organized between the #WorldClimateResearchProgramme, #WarmWorld, #DesinE, and #ESMO.

    📍 Across 10 locations, we explored #ClimateModeling, sparked new ideas, and created amazing climate #visualizations. The #Hamburg node, hosted at @mpimet, was only one of the many highlights of the week!

  8. 🌍 Currently, the 2024 #WarmWorld General Assembly is taking place, hosted by @awi in Bremerhaven.
    The project WarmWorld tackles the challenges of a heating planet by advancing the high resolution capabilities of our Earth System Model #ICON, thereby contributing significantly to the ongoing developments. WarmWorld aims to increase ICON’s run time efficiency and construct a more fine-meshed model grid. #HPC

  9. Some of our #hackathon participants got the chance to listen to Prof. Dr. Bernd Leitl, deputy Director of the Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg, talk about the many application fields of the #windtunnel at the #Geomatikum.

    A combination of field research, computational modelling and experiments conducted in the wind tunnel in order to receive the most valid and representative results for real world application.

  11. Today, the participants were able to get a close look at Levante, the Supercomputer at #DKRZ.

    Levante has been operating since March 2022, increasing the computing capacity at DKRZ four-fold. Its main memory exceeds 800 Terabytes (about 100.000 Laptops) and the computing power 14 PetaFLOPS, which are mainly used for modelling purposes.

  12. Day three comes to an end. 🥳

    Thanks to everyone who participated in our pre-#hackathon plot-challenge, and congrats to those of you who created some of the most outstanding visualisations!

    We finished the day with a dive into the research field of Sarah Kang, who is working with the department of climate dynamics on understanding the physical processes driving the observed, unexplained cooling trends in the tropical Pacific. 🌊

  13. After a bit of a rough start for some of our hackathon-Newbies, things have now started to settle in. Especially yesterday's World Café lead by Yuting Wu helped to get to know the community and the topics that are worked on during the hacking sessions.

    A group of bachelor students of @wur also paid us a visit, interviewing researchers about their personal career paths to get some inspiration for their own. We hope to see you again soon.

  19. 🧵 1/3 Many of our scientists would not be where they are today if there were not people like Karl-Hermann "Kalle" Wieners at the MPI-M:
    That's why he's in the spotlight today: Kalle [ˈkalə] develops scientific software for the institute's various climate models. He contributes to projects like #nextGEMS, #WarmWorld and #DestinE and is one of the go-to persons for ICON, MPI-ESM, or CMIP6 issues. His main focus are tools for work flow and result control, as well as data flow and data management.
