Alexander David Goode was a rabbi and chaplain in the US Army who gave his life to save other soldiers on a sinking ship during WW2.
Before the army, Rabbi Goode was born in Brooklyn and raised in Washington, DC. Besides being rabinically certified by Washington Hebrew Congregation, he also had a Ph.D from Johns Hopkins, and ran the first Boy Scout troop that was not only mixed race, but allowed scouts to earn Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant awards.
In Febuary 2, 1943, his boat was attached by a German submarine and instead of fleeing, he helped organize soldiers and helped distribute lifejackets to the other soldiers, including giving away his own lifejacket.
