  1. Biweekly #wanikani post is here yet again!

Burn rate: 4 items/day. Slow, but strong!

I’m currently struggling through a book called 文字渦 which extremely difficult for me to read, but equally fascinating! It is precisely the type of meta self-referencing literature that I enjoy (hey, Charlie Kauffman!) and at the same time it is all about about kanji! What could be better?

  2. In just about a week with #Bunpro, I've already covered half of #Genki I. I'm moving must faster than before. 5 new items per day. This is great!

I'm transitioning time spent at #WaniKani to Bunpro. I'm doing reviews as always, but I'm learning very few new WaniKani items daily.

  3. I'm nearly finished with #Genki I. Only a few exercises left. I've been studying consistently every week since start of January.

When I went to Japan I bought some manga. I planned to try to readドラえもん volume 1 when I finished Genki I, one of the simpler manga I bought.

With this in mind, the other day I looked at #Natively (learnnatively.com) to see what it said about Doraemon. It says #WaniKani level 21. I'm currently finishing 29. No issue there.

I read some comments to see if anyone mentioned grammar level. I found a few comments mentioning N3. I'm not sure whether they're mentioning it in terms of vocabulary, grammar or both. But I know my grammar is barely a solid N5...

I looked up some more books. Many had WK level around 30, mostly below.

So... I've come to the hard realisation (which I already knew, but it hit me harder now) that my grammar is lagging behind. A lot!

With that in mind, I jumped into #Bunpro three days ago. I planned to do it after finishing Genki I and II, but now I know that's a mistake. I need to move much faster and in a solid way with grammar (spaced repetition, because I learn grammar and forget it...), and I think Bunpro will help. I'm enjoying it so far, let's see how it develops. (Ah, I synched vocab with WK, so I don't get furigana I should know. Also disabled English translation by default.)

I'm using the Genki I grammar deck for now, as a full review of everything I should already know and as a way to practice. And I'm learning new things/nuances because Bunpro has different explanations for the same grammar points.

Anyway, I'll soon try to read ドラえもん and see how it goes. The extent to which I'll understand it or not will be important information to assess how far or short I am in this long road of #JapaneseLearning .

  4. I made it halfway through #WaniKani 🙌 🇯🇵

Just another few years and I'll get to the end. I just have to live long enough. And I already know what 地獄 means. 😂

  5. Guess who levelled up (to lvl 10) on #wanikani 🥳 I still have no clue why I'm doing this to myself, but it's kinda fun xD Though I should probably start doing #genki#japanese #learning #languages

  6. Reached #WaniKani level 27! Closing in on level 30!

I'm progressing in grammar too. But still to finish Genki I. I'm at section 9. I feel that I study new grammar and forget how to apply parts I already studied, which is frustrating. I probably should use Bunpro to help (which I've seen @indutny mention many times), but I've decided to stick with Genki I and II (which I own) before going for Bunpro...

I've very recently started listening to the reading practice from the YouTube channel below. They upload lots of listening content. I'm very bad at listening. I'll only be able to improve my comprehension by practicing listening and studying more grammar. No way around that.

  7. Reached #WaniKani level 26.

I've been consistently studying grammar with #Genki. I read the whole section, then do some exercises each day (not every day, my objective is at least four times a week). I do them on the website below, which allows me to get automatic correction of my answers. And it also has summaries of the grammar points. I re-read parts of the section as needed as I progress through the exercises. When I finish all exercises for a section, I move to the next one.

I feel my reading comprehension is improving since I'm finally dedicating myself to grammar.

I'm currently completing section 8 from the first Genki volume. It's quite behind compared to my progress at WaniKani.

  8. A bit shocked to learn the kanji form of たくさん、沢山 .

Same happend some weeks ago with 有り難う、ありがとう .

  10. Today's a troublesome selection... Will probably confuse some of these.

  12. I was trying to revise my #Kanji with #Wanikani, but I've ended up #YakShaving and have actually spent more time recently thinking about #Romaji, reading up on #JapaneseLanguage entry methods, and filing documentation bug reports on alternative keyboard layouts and a Linux IME that I don't even use (yet?)

For more advanced users - #wanikani for kanji, #bunpro for grammar.

Both use a ‘see flash card → type solution’ approach. Wanikani is more of a structured course than the other alternatives, with mnemonics included.

  14. Not really a update, but still 😅

I just finished studying all N3 points on ! Obviously I'm nowhere near being comfortable using them and will keep reviewing it for a few months (until burned), but it is a big milestone for myself.

Relatedly, just as I did with N5/N4, I'm going to take a break from studying new stuff on bunpro.jp until August just to let things settle down in my memory a bit before moving on!

  15. I ended up shelving #Wokabulary in favour of #Anki. Mainly because the #SRS in Anki felt smarter tbh. Having an app tell you "come back in five weeks" after you picked "yes, know it" a few times feels weird when youre used to "again | hard | good | easy" scheduling markers.

Anki still isn't as granular as #WaniKani / #Tsurukame but it feels like an Achievement to have a growing deck!

(I'm happy to share the deck but it's a growing, breathing work in progress that will eventually have all on #Lingodeer Japanese 1 after I get through that course. It also uses Anki TTS because I don't have recordings for the words)

  18. I added Anki / Wokabulary to my tool belt because I feel like I should do some SRS based vocabulary practice for what lingodeer feeds me in new words.

Now there's WaniKani for Kanji, Lingodeer for grammar / vocab / general learning and Wokabulary for vocab drills.

(and Anki for the occasional Hiragana / Katakana reminder - I might migrate my Wokabulary list to it if I can find a way to have it do TTS).

  20. CW: language, education, japanese

I'm not sure if I'm bold or mad to add #WaniKani to my daily #Japanese studies but it feels like it should go well alongside #LingoDeer?

  25. Not really a update, but still a notable one!

    I just got a 365 day streak on BunPro.jp !

  26. I didn't quite start learning N3, but there are some grammar that I'm encountering now and then (べき, について, にとって), so I decided to add it to SRS queue and be done with.

My current plan is to get back to one grammar point per day once I hit level 20 on . It might happen just in a couple of weeks!

  27. My immediate goal remains to get to level 20 of , and I'm trying to not think too much about the "Death" and “Hell" levels that follow it 😅

Meanwhile, decided that I deserve some punishment too and consistently spams me with 30-40 reviews per day even though I'm learning only 1 new grammar point per day now. It certainly helps with my grammar, but SRS can be really harsh!

That's it for my complaining. Thanks for tuning in!
