After a long day of looking at cosplayers, what’s better than getting out and seeing some real wild animals, hanging out in a park, or browsing antiques? Located just a few miles north of downtown, Seattle’s cute Wallingford neighborhood offers some wonderful respite from con fun. With the cutting-edge Woodland Park Zoo, the tranquil Woodland Park, and the delightful Vintage Mall, this area is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
The Innovative Woodland Park Zoo
The Woodland Park Zoo isn’t your typical animal park—it’s an avant-garde sanctuary that combines technology and conservation in extraordinary ways. As you step through the entrance, you’re greeted by the sight of a futuristic, solar-paneled visitor center that sets the tone for what’s to come.
“Zoo Birthday – 13” by Michael Hanscom is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 and used with permission. The WPZ celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2024, welcoming over 1.25 million visitors during that time. The zoo has always been groundbreaking in the way it displays animals in natural-feeling habitats. My kids love going to the zoo, especially the vast African Savanna, a space designed to simulate the experience of an African safari without leaving North Seattle. That section boasts gazelles, zebras, ostriches, and lions, all coexisting thousands of miles from their original biome.
Similarly, the Tropical Rain Forest provides visitors with an opportunity to see lemurs, gorillas, and toucans all living in a habitat that will warm you on a cold Seattle day. My kids are particularly fond of the toucans. When near the west entrance, my whole family loves seeing the penguins at play in their enclosure, which has plexiglass so that viewers can watch these wonderful creatures waddle on dry land and “fly” through the water.
“Zoo Birthday – 31” by Michael Hanscom is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 and used with permission. My kids also like to visit the large reptile realm, which is home to the amazing Komodo dragon and majestic giant forest tortoise. The butterfly garden is a can’t-miss area of astonishing beauty and diversity. There’s also a special petting zoo that allows the youngest visitors to get up close and personal with sweet animals and rub their hands in some fur.
Oh, and make sure to ride the WPZ carousel, which is over 100 years old!
Whether you’re 7 or 70, you’ll find a lot to enjoy at the Woodland Park Zoo. Many evenings, the park sponsors concerts or community events. Bring a frisbee and pack or buy a lunch because nearby is a glorious park.
A Stroll Through Woodland Park
After being dazzled by the zoo, a leisurely stroll through Woodland Park is the perfect way to relax, play, and have a snack. This lush, green oasis offers sprawling lawns, winding paths, and picturesque picnic spots. The park is a favorite among locals for its serene atmosphere and beautifully maintained gardens, which change with the seasons, offering new colors and scents year-round.
“Woodland Park Rose Garden” by Seattle Parks and Recreation is licensed under CC BY 2.0.In August, when you’re in Seattle for Worldcon, the Woodland Park Rose Garden should be in full splendor, with over 3,000 roses from 200 varieties spread out across 2.5 acres of the park. Since the rose garden is pesticide-free, you can sniff to your heart’s content while knowing that once the blooms fade, they will be fed to animals in Woodland Park Zoo!
Families can spend a fun afternoon at the park’s playground, while fitness enthusiasts often take advantage of the jogging trails and outdoor fitness equipment. On any given day, you’ll find people practicing yoga, flying kites, or simply basking in the sun with a good book. The park also hosts various community events, such as outdoor concerts, farmers’ markets, and art fairs, adding a vibrant social element to the peaceful surroundings.
The Quaint Vintage Mall
Just a short walk from the park, you’ll find the Wallingford Vintage Mall, a treasure trove for anyone with an appreciation for nostalgia and unique finds. This charming mall is housed in a beautifully restored historic building, adding another layer of charm to the shopping experience.
Inside, you’ll discover a delightful collection of antiques, retro clothing, vinyl records, and quirky memorabilia. Each vendor brings their own personality and passion to their stalls, creating a diverse and eclectic mix of offerings. Whether you’re hunting for a mid-century modern armchair, a piece of vintage jewelry, or a rare LP, the Vintage Mall is sure to have something that catches your eye. After all, the Fed-Ex location in the convention center will help you ship that chair home!
The Vintage Mall staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to share the stories behind the items they sell. They often provide insights into the history and significance of their treasures for sale, making each purchase a unique and memorable experience.
Conclusion
Wallingford’s just a quick 15-minute drive north of the convention center, or 30-45 minutes by public transit, and is a journey well worth taking. There’s plenty to see and do in the area, as well as lots of good eating and shopping. Make sure to share some pictures of your favorite animals with friends!

More pictures of Wallingford floods from the air drone photos shared from a friend. The River Thames level currently is not at 1894 levels but not sure if it has peaked /dropped. But higher than all floods since then. Please see alt text for more details. #Oxfordshire #Wallingford #ukfloods #RiverThames

A number of cars unfortunately left in the Wallingford Lido carpark have been caught in the floods over the past couple of days. The water levels in the River Thames floods have risen since Friday to Saturday. You can see the height difference on the mini in the photos. River levels above the 2003 flood. #RiverThames #Flooding #Wallingford #Oxfordshire

It’s a lovely day in #Seattle… for car prowlers. 😒
I visited with a friend for a few hours in #Wallingford, and came out to find something very wrong with my car - when I turned it on, it revved up like a cross between a Harley & a jet engine.
A look underneath the car indicates some things are disconnected. My mechanic guesses that I’ve fallen victim to #CatalyticConverter theft, the bane of #Prius owners.
Now I get to wait for the #TowTruck. 😕

Hey #Seattle #Fremont #Wallingford: a dog just ran up behind my daughter and bit her, unprovoked. 42nd and Woodland Park. The bite broke the skin. The owner showed up, said the dog jumped the fence (but didn't apologize) and then both owner and dog jumped in a car and disappeared. Daughter was running away by this point. (She is home, shaken, but okay.) Dog is small, white & tan, blue collar, called "Max" by the owner, an older white gentleman. Please help find the dog and owner. Please amplify.
