the view from the windcreen of our car and for anyone approaching the shoreline. this sign is enourmous. over 8ft or 2.5 meters tall and completely fills the view of this tiny park. every single park, beach or seating area in this reagion has a massive sign of rules. mostly things you can't do. the worst is that you are expected to enjoy this paid limited access to nature only at certain times of the year.

with they unfathonable leniency we give corporations in regards to the natural world; I am furious every time I encounter signs like these. In our area, there is not one single public, natural space, that you do not have to pay to view. Access is heavily restricted to small fractions of the landscape and payment is only available by cellphone, which we do not own. the areas have many restrictions and the penalties are real. how did we get here?

Young ones. The caps will grow into near spheres, hiding the stems and the central spot will open into a hole to emit farts of spores.

Yesterday, I went for a #WalkInTheWoods
It was easy to imagine the vast network of fungal hyphae under the surface because there were mushrooms everywhere.
Here's a bunch of collared earthstars.
If you give them a quick pinch, a puff of spores, like smoke, appears from the central hole.

Not since Twitter. So a lot of my new social media friends haven't seen this part of Kawartha Lakes, on the Oak Ridge Moraine.
It should be covered in snow but winter forgot to come by this year.

Went for a walk in the forest and was reminded that it is wild and slightly unsafe. The spruces have been weakened by the spruce bark beetle, and tonight a storm toppled yet another one over my favourite path. I took this picture while winds still howled in the dead and dying trees around me.
