  2. Good morning. 🌤️🌉💨

    5 July 2026

I received a short hose I’d ordered to connect a hose reel to a water faucet. I thought I’d bought one with two female ends — exactly what I needed — but nope. It was just a regular hose, only shorter. Four feet long. What am I supposed to do with that?

And the punchline: I didn’t need a new hose anyway. I just needed to tighten the connections. That tells you exactly how I feel in the mornings when I first gen up. It’s the perfect metaphor.

There is coffee, though. By some miracle, the doctors haven’t taken that away — knock on wood. As long as I don’t add anything to it, I’m good. I call it my last vice. Something true about aging is that when one thing goes out of whack, the doctor hands you a list of foods to avoid. When something else starts acting up, you get another list. Then another. Eventually it feels like you’re juggling prohibitions. If a food isn’t banned on one list, it’s almost guaranteed to be banned on another. Lettuce, though — lettuce is safe.

My new lunch go‑to is a Marketside Salad. Then for supper, I live in the danger zone and often have real food. It’s just that so many dishes I once took for granted are now off the table. How does a hotdog sound? I love them, but I may have eaten my last some time ago. When my wife asks what I want for supper, I always say meatloaf, knowing full well it won’t happen.

Several years ago, a doctor suggested I give up bread. My response at the time was, “In your dreams, doctor.” But as it turns out, dreams do come true.

“The trouble with life is that it’s daily.” — paraphrased from Mignon McLaughlin

“I’d rather take coffee than compliments just now.” — Louisa May Alcott

“To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art.” — La Rochefoucauld

“If you don’t make mistakes, you’re not working on hard enough problems.” — Frank Wilczek

  6. Good morning. 🐦🐦🐦

    25 June 2025

For some reason, I woke up at five this morning. It’s quiet—so quiet that even my border collie, Charlie, went back to bed, I think. He’s not in here. Sunrise is still half an hour away. The days are growing shorter now; little by little, the sun lingers in sleep just a bit longer each morning. I usually wait for the ambient light to slip through the windows before I stir, but here I am, alone with my thoughts. Once again, I find myself wondering: Why am I up?

I think, my dog, Ben was in my dreams last night. You know he passed a few weeks ago. He used to wake me at these impossible hours, long before the birds thought to sing. I don’t believe in the supernatural, but if I did—maybe he came to say goodbye.

“The morning steals upon the night, melting the darkness.” — William Shakespeare

“Sometimes, the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” — A.A. Milne

  8. Karakung (Cobbs Creek), PA

I took a long walk around the neighborhood with my son yesterday 😉
We didn’t say much, but he started to cheer up a bit when we crossed this little creek 😊

  10. Darby Creek winds through the Philly suburbs, feeding the Delaware River. Stocked with trout in spring, they’re usually gone by June. No wild trout, and downstream sections may have water quality issues. But it's my favorite stream😊

    Darby Creek, PA

Last weekend - fish were probably under the ice sheet. I sent a fly underneath from upstream, but it didn’t work 😅
The ice should be mostly melted by tomorrow when I plan to fish 😉

A very long rod with a fixed-length line would be ideal for this situation - no need to walk on the thin ice or to worry about the fly line getting caught by ice. But, I had my standard 9-ft fly rod with me 🙃
    I do have a 17-ft keiryu rod that I should've brought along 🤔

While Darby Creek was mostly frozen during the weekend, this small tributary seems to have warmer water and was not frozen😊

This pool was one of few unfrozen spots with a hope of catching fish, I cast my fly line several times because that is what I do 😉

  26. Good morning. 😴🫘☕

    17 January 2025

Sometimes in the morning, when Ben is barking at the door, I stay in bed, hoping he'll stop, but he never does. He doesn't stop until he sees light from beneath the bedroom door. He's been getting bossy in his old age. Eventually, I get up, put my pants on, brush my teeth, and let the dogs out—just in case you're wondering who. I fully intend to kick back in my recliner when they come back in, but the little bit of moving around that I do wakes me up enough that I end up grabbing a cup of coffee and coming into my office to write to you. Ben, on the other hand, comes in and goes right back to sleep. Charlie does too, for that matter, and step one for the day is complete.

  30. Good morning. 🌿🍂🍃

    31 December 2024

I was once again awakened out of a deep sleep this morning; Ben was moving around in the bedroom. I stumbled out of bed and opened the bedroom door Ben rushed out and Charlie rushed in. I touched my teeth with a toothbrush, then went to let the dogs out - in case you're wondering who. My brain was only half awake at this point, so I blundered around, went to make coffee and had to fill the coffee grinder. For some reason I grabbed a small box marked Dark Chocolate Expresso Beans and poured them into the grinder - I guess that I was trying something different. I then had chocolate candy in the grinder, so had to stop and clean the grinder. Today is not Monday, is it?

  32. Reading Time: 3 minutes

One winter I woke seven or eight days in a row at 2am to be at work and ready to work for 0400. It was very hard to do, and since then I prefer not to have to wake up too early. Yesterday I woke at 0600, naturally, but also because I wanted to set off by 07:30 to be at my destination by 08:30. Traffic was good so I arrived half an hour earlier than anticipated. The one hour drive took half an hour.

The early arrival is probably due to two reasons. The first is that I set off half an hour earlier than I needed to, in anticipation of bad traffic. The second reason is that I did not drive to Morges. I got off the motorway in Rolle, just as the traffic jam starts, and drove along the vineyards.

If I had stayed on the motorway I would have been stuck in the Morges traffic jam. The paradox of the Morges traffic jam is that it starts just before two lanes become three. Expanding the motorway didn’t resolve congestion. It just shifted it from Morges to Rolle.

    ## The Early Morning Challenge

For me the early morning challenge is not in waking early, but in getting to sleep at a reasonable time. That’s what I find hard. It’s hard to fall asleep at 2200 if your normal bed time is midnight or one. The other challenge is sleeping, despite noise pollution. You may be exhausted but if you want to sleep during an outdoor music festival, you won’t. You’ll be kept awake until two, and then be sleep deprived. The same problem occurs with noisy neigbours.

    ## The Morning Advantage

In my eyes the greatest morning advantage, during the hotter months is aerating before the smokers wake up, and the outside air temperature gets too high for the outdoor air to have an effect on indoor air temperature. It’s also a relatively quiet time. Those that like to throw things into the back of pickup trucks are not yet awake.

I often set off stupidly early, to avoid traffic, because if I set off at the right time, my journey would go from 20 minutes to an hour or more.

    ## A Trick

I have a trick that I have used for a while. I set the alarm to go off half an hour or an hour before I want to get up. I then set a second alarm for the time at which I want to wake. In my experience the first wakeup is hard, but by snoozing for a few minutes before the second alarm I recharge, and then I’m ready for the day. I am not alone.

    > It’s not when you get up that matters – it’s how you choose to use the precious minutes you have that really counts.

Although I would expand that it depends on when your neighbours, or environment allow you to sleep. If I wanted to wake earlier than I do I would need to devote time to acclimate to waking earlier, and sleeping earlier. It takes time to adapt to the new sleep schedule.

    ## Twice The Discipline

Waking at 5am requires twice the discipline. It requires the discipline to get up at 5am but it also requires the discipline to go to bed eight hour earlier. If you struggle with getting to sleep, then waking at 5am will also be a struggle.

Bragging that you’re part of the club could be fun, but it’s a matter of self-discipline until your circadian rythmn changes.
