The long weekend (due to Wellington Anniversary Day) got off to a windy & wet start; our empathy went to the tent campers who accompanied us at Kaitoke Regional Park (📷1). Crossing the Remutaka Range into the Wairarapa, we wandered bustling Greytown & a relatively subdued Martinborough (📷2) before making for the freedom camp at Lake Domain on the northern shore of Wairarapa Moana Wetland. After a quiet night (🅿️ nose into the wind) we called in for treats at Carterton’s deservedly popular Clareville Bakery (📷3), to enjoy later with coffee after a walk/ sandblasting on Riversdale Beach (📷4). At the beach’s northern end we encountered terns, oystercatchers, dotterels, pied stilts & fur seals; the Castlepoint headland loomed on the hazy horizon.

Different topics at this week's #grandma recording session: She talked about a local guy named Karl Ganter, who went to #NewZealand in his forties and returned right before World War I. He said he was living for 40 years in Germany and didn't have a thing and then in NZ made money with sheep, that he will never need to work again.
