  1. Ham Radio Challenge Week 17 - find your closest repeater.

Closest is a semi-private low power AllStarLink node on UHF a few blocks away, two VHF repeaters (#W8RP and #W8UM) with active nets, and the odd UHF to 10 meter band repeater also #W8UM .

Line of sight if you are up high enough are a UHF and a VHF repeater on a county tower, the VHF (#N8DUY) can be heard in a 10-county area plus parts of Canada.

A good guide is from #W8SRC

  2. Monitoring the ARROW #W8RP and UMARC #W8UM Ann Arbor repeaters and tossing out my call sign every now and again after the repeater IDs itself, hoping that @kb6nu will be listening.

The W8RP and W8UM repeaters I can hit pretty easily from my comfy chair, and my Quansheng is charging while it's monitoring, so really no extra effort.

  4. Sat in on the ARROW #W8RP club board meeting tonight, hosted by James #AE8JF

A good bunch of folks with some pretty good ideas about how to improve the experiences of new hams through testing, training, education, field events like the monthly AMPteam radio in the park outing, weekly nets on FM, DMR, and (hopefully soon) RTTY, and the upcoming #AACME maker event at the Ann Arbor District Library.

  5. At the ARROW #w8rp board meeting, I brought cookies.

  6. Looking forward to what will be a regular #RTTY net on the #W8FSA 146.92 repeater in Ypsilanti (St Joes). Al #K8WXQ is net control. The first scheduled net was yesterday 2024-03-04, the next one is next Monday 2024-03-11 at 700p Eastern.

This starts 60 minutes before the #ARROW net on #W8RP 146.96 Monday nights 800p.

When I did this last I used #DroidRTTY to encode/decode, will be looking for RTTY software that can run on my MacBook Air (either MacOS or iOS worth a try).

  11. @w8tam Sounds great!

Esch Park is a great park for QRPpp to the #W8RP repeater since it's so close by, and a couple of folks reported that they could hear me from their QTH. Lots of space to set up antenna too, now I just need a bicycle portable HF rig....

  12. The ARROW Monday night net starts at 800p on the #W8RP 146.96- repeater, located atop Wolverine Tower in Ann Arbor.

I'm planning to activate Esch Park AA-048 for tonight's net. The test will be whether I can do QRPp or QRPpp operations on 2 meters - WoTo is very close, nearly line of sight. My Kenwood TH-22AT low power setting is something like 50 milliwatts.

  13. Outing today to Brighton State Recreation Area for the 2023 Winter Field Day from the ARROW club operating as #W8RP . We were at the Wegawas rustic cabin operating 2I MI - one voice station, one CW station.

In addition to Winter Field Day there was #POTA activity - look for spots on K-3384 (and you know I don't see that on pota.app/#/profile/W8RP so maybe something else is going on).

  14. 9 check-ins on the #W8RP Arrow DMR net just now, Matt #WS8U net control, 21 minutes run time. Stations from Ann Arbor, a few others in downstate Michigan, Marquette in the U.P., and several from Florida.

Noted that this Saturday night net is now listed on the BridgeCom #DMR net listing:

    bridgecomsystems.com/pages/ama

(I know that I've also seen longer lists of DMR nets, but as ever you never really know which ones are active until you try them.)

  15. The Arrow #W8RP #DMR net meets every Saturday at 7 pm Eastern (Sunday 0000Z) on the Michigan statewide channel #TG3126 .

  16. Successful #DMR QSO with Tom #N8TJ on Michigan #TG3126 .

The #W8RP UHF DMR repeater is about 3 miles due south of here (Wolverine Tower or "WoTo"), and I'm on the 3d floor in a building with brick walls next to a bunch of other buildings with brick walls. Yet with all that obstruction the reception was just a little bit glitchy (0-3% error rate) and reported 100% copy.

The other piece of that good news is that I don't need to build a second DMR hotspot to have coverage here.

  17. CW: ARROW / W8RP Monday night net: report

    146.96- #AnnArbor Mon 800p ET

The ARROW crew operates mobile and portable a local park once a month as the #AMPteam . Outdoor temps in Saline MI are about 26F / -3C, so after gathering in the park the crew retreated back to their warm vehicles.

The note from the park is that if your HT is desensed from nearby transmitters and can't hear the repeater, switch to the reverse (input frequency) and pick up local transmissions directly.

  18. CW: ARROW / W8RP Monday night net

Monday night on 2m, net on 146.96- out of the ARROW repeater in Ann Arbor EN82. We regularly get check-ins from Washtenaw, Wayne, Oakland, Livingston, and Monroe County. There is no digital in on this repeater, and no scanner relay to Broadcastify that I'm aware of. (A DX challenge, I guess.)

Net starts at 800p Eastern and might typically run an hour or so.

There's also a MichiganONE DMR net on Brandmeister TG 3126 (Michigan) at 830p Eastern.

  19. CW: APRS + AREDN

    @k6hx

Nick #W8XM did a short writeup on the intersection between #APRS and #AREDN on the ARROW #W8RP AREDN network in Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti MI (Washtenaw County, EN82).

The direct link is arrow.groups.io/g/mesh/message (you may have to be a subscriber).

tldr: Pi + software modem doing an APRS I-Gate at a location *without* Internet access of its own, connected over one 5GHz and one 2.4GHz hop to W8XM's home network gateway (special segmented network exclusively used for aredn internet)

  20. CW: AREDN, using one net to build another net

The #ARROW / #W8RP crew in Ann Arbor is doing some #AREDN upgrades and tests for their microwave network.

Monitoring the chat now on the ARROW 2 meter repeater, 146.96- Ann Arbor, FM only (not on digital nets), grid EN82.

It is super helpful to have one working network to help you bootstrap the next network, same as always.

  21. The #ARROW #W8RP Monday night net runs Mondays at 800p in Ann Arbor on the 146.96- repeater. Dan @kb6nu is net control tonight.

    Club: w8rp.org

You need to be local to #EN82 Ann Arbor to join, as the repeater is not on any digital nets.

Topics tonight: #AREDN and the local microwave net, the lunar eclipse, #FediHams and Mastodon, #APRS reception, the frequency measurement test, Fri. repeater crawl, Weds. club meeting, international DMR, #5V7RU dxpedition, and more.

  22. The #ARROW / #W8RP monthly meeting is Wednesday, 2022-11-09 on Zoom. Room opens 630p, meeting starts 700p.

DM me if you are interested in more details (not planning to post the Zoom for reasons).

    Topics:

    - General Club Updates
    - Hospital Emergency Amateur Radio Team
    - #AREDN Status
    - AMPTeam Overview
    - Hands on Museum Station
    - New Club Project
    - December Board Elections

This is the #AnnArbor area club.

Thanks to James #AE8JF (previously #KC8BGJ) for the update.

  23. The local club - #ARROW / #W8RP - has been doing #AREDN and microwave network setup the past few days. I've been following along on the mailing list though I don't have any microwave gear at home and don't have a mast to mount it on even if I did.

We do have access to a couple of tall buildings though, and enough traffic using #APRS to test. Proof of work:

    Last path: W8VWY>T2QT8W via WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1,qAO,W8XM-10

It's nice to see a network finally come together.

  24. @eamoEI7LC @do1mj

Thanks Eamo! And I had a nice QSO with @michael DK1MI just now as well.

I did a little writeup about a month ago about #FediHams at

    vielmetti.typepad.com/w8emv/20

    with stories of use through #Peanut #Echolink and #Brandmeister #DMR .

My next technical challenge on that net is to connect through the #W8RP #ARROW club DMR repeater via RF mobile so that I can not just be tethered to my hotspot.

  25. Saturday mornings the #ARROW club - #W8RP - hosts a weekly Zoom meeting "The Clinic". 9 on the call at the moment.

    w8rp.org

Some recent club activities have included setting up #AREDN 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz nodes, and mobile and portable operations with a monthly group outing in a park.

2m propagation patterns are always of interest especially when there are band openings.

Naturally on the call this week also a discussion of the week's events on social media.

  26. @kb1gim

Here in the Ann Arbor Michigan we have a shut-in net 3x daily - 2x on #2m and 1x on #DMR. A couple of folks are very happy being net control and keeping an orderly discussion for everyone.

We have a well-placed local #DMR repeater on #W8RP with coverage of a lot of the county on 70cm, so you don't need more than a radio (and don't really need your own hotspot) to make it work.

  27. CW: DMR, fix your radio hour, net at 1600 EDT / 2000 UTC

The #W8RP #DMR repeater is back working in Ann Arbor, MI due to the work of Dinesh @AB3DC and Jay #WB8TKL and the Brandmeister team. For reasons (as of yet unexplained) the server was out of sync with call signs so no audio was getting thru, tho connections were being acked.

Every day at 1600 EDT (2000 UTC) we host a "shut-in roundtable" on DMR Michigan statewide, BM 3126. All are welcomed, and we had a check-in from #M1MRB on 3/27.

    73!
