  1. W.G. Sebald im Gespräch mit Michael Silverblatt (Bookworm)

    W. G. Sebald in relation to our new century. In this conversation, Sebald describes the source of his rare prose tone and explores the invisible presence of the concentration camps in his work.

  2. CW: Murder of indigenous people

    @IndyMediaAus

    Strange little article thst.

Plays games with the readers' attention, while flittering around the genocide which allowed whites to settle Australia.

There is truth which is too much to face up to on first encounter.

I have feared for some time that it will take severe consequences to jolt enough Americans out of their fancies.

The book linked has the Germans, about 10 years after the marching and rallying described above, slipping from their Nazi fancy into studied avoidance of considering the hell that had come for them after the marching and rallying.

I wonder what lies in America's future.

  4. Remembering #MaxSebald / #WGSebald and the journeys he'd take me with in his peculiar writings.
#RingsOfSaturn was the first of his books I went along with.

Thinking it'd be good to free some books from their packing boxes and get them shelved again.

  5. Reading my 'Bavarian uncles'. It still seems strange, reassuringly jarring to me that, as a kid brought up in the NW of England, I can relate so well to these two artists who were brought up in remote Alpine villages. Due to the extensive time I spent in their neck of the woods, I completely understand all the cultural references, the people, their lives. Reading them, it's like being at a Christmas gathering of relations and hearing all the old, familiar stories. #WernerHerzog #WGSebald #books

  6. I'd been putting off reading W. G. Sebald's Across the Land and the Water, the only book of his I haven't read, because I didn't want to reach the end of his oeuvre, but I'm reading it now.
His life was cut short far too early (he was only 57) when he had a heart attack while driving and collided with an oncoming lorry.
There's no writer like him, and, as I happened to live where he grew up in the Bavarian Alps, and he moved to where I grew up, I felt a strange affinity.

  7. Stumbled on a good podcast about and around the book #RoadsidePicnic by #ArkadyAndBorisStrugatsky.

The participants are fairly diverse and knowledgable and successfully walk a line between seriousness and fun.

There is even a passing reference to a previous episode on #TheRingsOfSaturn by #WGSebald.

Would be interesting to hear from a someone familiar with both the #HistoryOfGermany around 1930 and #Modi's targeting of Muslims in modern India.

How deep do the similarities go?
Is the future of India likely to follow a similar path to 1930s Germany?

I've got a faint memory of #WGSebald writing something about Germans in 1944 realising how valuable stability is compared to a imagined political utopia only after their homes and cities had been bombed to ruins and burnt to ash.

  9. @Richard_Littler #WGSebald certainly died far too young. (I am painfully conscious of this, having toasted his memory on the day I finally overtook him last year!) I re-read several of his books each year. A unique and brilliant voice.

  10. I just ordered the final book by #WGSebald. I'd been putting it off because, once I've read it, there's no more Sebald to look forward to.
    He went way too young.

  11. #NowPlaying One of my favourite artists with an album about one of my favourite authors. Patience (After Sebald) by The Caretaker. The moody, wistful album works with samples from Schubert's Winterreise.
