I hope for the sake of this lads family that suspension mods to #VWPolo had been notified to insurers (its been lowered, I compared it to my own first #car which is a similar model) , and there isn't too much data on the ECU or its difficult to capture as car has sat at bottom of River Nene for a few days (although memory chips can survive this!) as #insurers are *really* going to be digging deep into reducing their liabilities for this #crash, with a dead passenger and other injuries/trauma to the survivors.

Daily Mail managed to doorstep witnesses/survivors and gleaned from them he was not habitually a bad/reckless driver and likely overcorrected steering trying to avoid #potholes - I 100% believe this, knowing what rural roads are like round here!

I am actually tempted to try this - lad says he is 1,86m tall (I am only 1,65m tall so would have even more room) and it was even comfortable during winter when he was visiting places up mountains with -11 degrees Celsius at night - just need to remember that everything in the interior is the other way round in a right hand drive car #VWPolo #VWPolo6C #CarCamping

*5 hours* out in the yard today to install new microswitch unit for #VW #DSG gear selector - whole entire centre console of #VWPolo had to come out - a bear of a job, especially removing a fiddly connector for the USB and getting it over the handbrake lever). Switch fitted and then it all has to go back together.

At least now I don't have "error: workshop! Leave vehicle only in position P" randomly appearing and USB music playback still works #CarMaintenance #AutoRepair #bladibarsket

High level #brake light stopped working last night - found broken cable in loom between C-pillar and tailgate (this is a common problem due to the boot being constantly opened and shut). Managed to splice cable (after initial hassle with a duff splice I had to cut off and being left with even shorter bit at the tailgate end to work with. Tested the fix, wrapped splices and extra cable piece with Tesa tape and put the grommet back on..

I've mostly always driven #superminis and am regularly on the road late at night - whilst I've noticed other drivers take more chances if I'm in something like the shed of an #Opel / #Vauxhall #Corsa we use as a fleet car, I rarely get bother in the #VWPolo - but I suspect many they see a brown man who looks younger than he is, think "he's probably got a knife in the door card" and their paranoia is the only thing stopping any conflict..

Finally a day when it was not pissing down nor below zero, so took the opportunity to do a maintenance wash on the #VWPolo to clear a months worth of winter grime #CarDetailing #Valeting #AutoDetailing #Detailing

#VWPolo #6C #SEL reached 40 000 miles (64374 km) today (so I have driven 23 416 miles (37 684 km) since I got the car in 2021) . Including the VW Polo 6C SE I previously owned, and courtesy cars/fleet cars I estimate in total I have driven 36 800 miles (59 224 km) since I started driving in April 2019..

Did my first #oil #service at the weekend (after researching what was involved, they don't publish Haynes manuals for a #VWPolo 6C so got a copy of "So Wird's Gemacht".

Hardest part of the job was getting plastic cover back on (near 0 space under the ramps and the clips kept springing out), and clearing a small quantity of spilled oil (I put the drain can too near the sump plug, forgetting the oil would travel about 100mm further due to gravity) #CarMaintenance #AutoMaintenance #VW #cars

Location of 7,5A fuse for windscreen washer pump motor (in orange oval) for RHD #VWPolo 6C (fixed this for a work colleague after the last cold spell as fuse had opened, probably due to screenwash freezing in the jets and motor stalling).

This fusebox is found behind the plastic cover below steering wheel and above pedals.

If you are in a country which drives on the right, this is flipped 180 degrees, the fuse you want will be on far left rather than far right.

#Carflation is also an issue here in #Europe, even with #superminis and #hatchbacks - a former staff member owned an #VWPolo Typ AW (the latest variant since 2018) and it is noticeably wider than my Typ 6C (and very slightly longer by about 100mm).

The Polo already has solid bodywork and a good safety rating since at least the 2000s (if not even before then) - so the growth in size is more to benefit the driver and other occupants by providing more interior room..

Work colleague asked me to investigate failed headlight on her #VWPolo 6C and identify the correct bulb (online sites show both H4 and H7). This one has 2 * H7 (dipped and main beam)

She was going to order one online, but garage next door had them in stock and the chap gave one to her for free, I managed to fit it in a few minutes (hardest part is getting the lampholder back in), so she doesn't need to worry about getting a traffic violation (or being unsafe on rural roads)

A kind chap on #VWPolo forum sent me a link to every workshop manual for 6R/6C (2010-2018), including officially approved transmit power and antenna placements for #radio equipment installed in the vehicle. I may treat myself to a multimode #CB knowing it isn't going to upset the car's ECU, once I have found a magmount that won't scuff the paint (the radio will be in something like a "bug out box" USA #hams make and sit on the passenger or rear seat, I don't intend on using it whilst driving

And everything is working again (hope this part stays working for a while - I don't want to be dealing with fitting that grommet into a hole in an awkward space too often..

The fuel filler cap door actuator on my #VWPolo 6C stopped working (so the door can be opened all the time, I have to park in town sometimes so though I think there's an anti syphon baffle in the filler neck I didn't want to invite temptation, or for some blighter to nick the filler cap). Whole rear light cluster had to come out, took a while to get rubber grommet for cable seated after installing new part (tip: tie a string to old one and use it to pull the new cable through) #CarMaintenance

New indicator LED assembly arrived today - fitted it this afternoon - as a Chinese pattern part it is slightly different dimensions, pillar holding one self tapping screw snapped off as hole was about 0,5mm too small (it still fits together) - amber LEDs are a slightly different shade and the connectors had to be reseated to get the LEDs to work reliably - there was a weird ECU glitch as well which put the car in right hand traffic mode but at least I now have working indicators again >> #VWPolo

TIL: #VWPolo 6C SEL with LED headlamps has PY21W indicator bulbs at the rear, and WY21W at the front!! But it is neither which has started acting up in my car (which I only discovered after hauling out both clusters) but right hand side LED repeater strip in the door mirror, it is making water and LEDs are dim (I'm getting double flash/tick warning when I use the indicators - alas).. Have had to shell out around £20 for a new one, and its a pig to open up the mirror assembly..

Scanned car for any error codes, cleared off usual 3 intermittent ones - nothing major, just glitches with door lock, airco and the USB link for the audio (all of which seem to work OK), and coded in feature that shows how much petrol I need to fill the tank.

Initially display came up as gallons (not that useful - petrol has been sold in litres for *years* in UK!) but I can change the units on touch screen menu. Off to fill up now, so will see how accurate this is #vwpolo #OBDeleven

Blower fan speed control resistor for my cars airco gave up ghost on Friday - I only had "off" and 4 (full speed).

New resistor arrived today and I installed it in the yard outside in about 1,5 hours (I made a couple of mistakes putting the glove compartment back and had to repeat the process).

Tip: get both long and stubby Torx drivers (they are T15 in this car) and trim removal tools for the side panel that has to be removed (not shown in these photos)

I also replaced the bulbs in the DRL (daytime running lights) as one was out (it survived the prang earlier this month but not the body shop!), the trim can be removed with flat head screwdrivers (be careful though as it has a lot of fragile plastic clips). The Torx head is either T25 or T27 (both seem to be in use, they and the design of the trim and lamp housings vary depending on what model Polo you have!)
