  1. @jonah Yes but still, as many as possible should have the skills to evade vpn detection bc we should make this as expensive as possible to police

Wireguard is desiged to be easy, but easy comes minor risks.

    >By default, WireGuard stores your IP address on a VPN server until it reboots

For most people this is no issue, in countries like China, Iran, Russia and a few others, it can be an issue. see:

  3. CW: UK politics - petition to stop a proposed ban on children using VPNs

If you're a British citizen and/or UK resident, please consider reviewing and signing the below petition 🩷

UK Government and Parliament - Do not ban children from using virtual private networks

We call upon the UK Government to reject any calls or lobbying that propose to restrict or ban the use of virtual private networks ("VPNs") for children, because of the impact this would have on other VPN users.

    More details

An amendment agreed by the House of Lords proposes an addition to the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill: "Action to prohibit the provision of VPN services to children in the United Kingdom". The method and implementation would likely rely on 3rd-party facial scans or ID checks, which we believe are invasive. Thus, such a law would cause massive collateral damage for the millions of current users who rely on VPNs for privacy and security.

Regardless of your citizenship or residency, boosts, quote boosts, and shares will be very much appreciated 🫶

  4. RE: mastodon.thenewoil.org/@thenew

Next up will be a VPN ban. Many tech-y people will see that and think “lol yeah well that’s not going to stop *me* from using a VPN”

A VPN ban isn’t really meant stop you from using one. It means when they catch you doing so, they’ll use the fact you’re using this harmless technology itself as a *pretense* to lock you up without needing to do any “hard work” (i.e. an investigator’s job) like actually confirming whether you committed a real crime.

Don’t think you won’t be impacted just because you know how to outsmart an ISP filter! This is not a plan to protect children or stop you from consuming adult media. It is a ploy to eventually eliminate ALL freedom of expression and free access to information in the UK.

And the same goes for Chat Control and encrypted messengers, btw

Is there any client that will work with 8.1? Openvpn used to work fine until this morning but not anymore. Also I'm from Russia, yeah 🤕 I'll be grateful for any helpful tips, but I'm no tech/it fella at all

  6. Privacy Watch: Michigan Bill Seeks to Ban VPNs & Online Content — Why Americans Must Take Action Now

Protecting Digital Freedom Is on the Line

On September 11, Michigan Republican representatives introduced a controversial piece of legislation known as the Anticorruption of Public Morals Act. If passed, this bill would not only ban adult content online but also outlaw VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) — a critical tool millions of Americans use to safeguard privacy, protect identities, and access a free and open internet.

The legislation, supported by six representatives, goes further than past bills in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi by demanding internet service providers block VPNs entirely, with penalties reaching up to $500,000. This isn’t just about adult content. It’s about setting a precedent that could strip away digital freedoms for every resident in Michigan — and possibly other states if similar bills follow.

Why This Matters to Every American

VPNs aren’t just for bypassing filters. They protect sensitive information on public Wi-Fi, prevent ISPs from tracking your browsing habits, and allow businesses to secure remote work. Blocking them puts everyday people, families, and businesses at risk.

What’s most alarming is how broad this law is. It doesn’t just target adult material — it includes AI-generated content, depictions of transgender individuals, and virtually any tool designed to bypass government-mandated internet restrictions. That means the freedom to learn, connect, and express yourself online could be silenced by political overreach.

    A Call to Action

The Anticorruption of Public Morals Act has not yet passed committee or reached the Michigan Senate floor. But as CNET reports, bills like this can serve as templates for other states. If Americans remain silent, these proposals could quickly spread nationwide.

📢 What you can do now:

Stay informed by following updates from organizations like the ACLU and EFF.

Contact your representatives and make your voice heard.

Support digital rights advocacy groups working to preserve internet freedom.

Share information to ensure your friends, family, and community understand what’s at stake.

This isn’t just about Michigan — it’s about whether Americans will allow elected officials to dictate what we can or cannot do online. The time to act is now.
