Of all the weirdo decisions taken in the #telecoms industry, I can't fathom the logic behind #Telcel blocking access to #VoWifi from #Starlink terminals.

In rural #Mexico there has been a massive uptake of starlink, such that in areas where there is a lack of direct mobile coverage from #2G, #3G, or #LTE towers, the most likely alternative is going to be a starlink.

So why then deny access to service for those customers connected in this way? After all, VoWifi calls are charged at the same rates as those routed over the mobile RAN (even as they don't actually use any resources on it)

Usually, #MNOs (#Mobile #Network #Operators) are blocking access to their #IMS over IP from outside the home country - in order, we presume to not have customers avoid the industry's outlandish "#roaming" charges. (there are some notable exceptions)

But in the case of Starlink, (as far as I can make out) - all the terminals in a national territory are routed via the ground station in that country. - I sort of understood this may be a requirement for operation?

So why not add starlink's #Mexican IPs to a whitelist for telcels?

Of course... we could all have been doing something else since long ago; #VoIP is a thing, VoWifi is just glorified VoIP, just as IMS is a glorified #SIP server.

But then there would not be so much #control...

Esto me recuerda: si usáis un smartphone con #Android (o cualquier SO derivado de #AOSP)

1. Marcad en el dialer *#*#4636#*#* (algunos forks propietarios deshabilitan el menú que lanza esta marcación; si no os sale, pasad al paso 3)
2. En los ajustes que os saldrán, buscad Set preferred network type y seleccionad NR/LTE (5G y 4G respectivamente) o LTE only si no contáis con 5G.
3. Como extra, en Ajustes > Redes e Internet, si os sale el menú Seguridad de redes móviles, marcad la Protección de redes 2G.

Si usáis #GrapheneOS, la opción de seleccionar solo 4G y/o 5G las podéis encontrar también en Ajustes > Redes e Internet > SIMs > {$operadora} > Tipo de red preferido
De paso, activad #VoLTE y #VoWiFi si no lo tenéis aún.

La infra telefónica sigue siendo insegura y se debe considerar no confiable: esto es solo reducción de daños al deshabilitar #2G y evitar sus múltiples inseguridades salvo cuando llaméis a Emergencias, que bajará a 2G independientemente de toda esta configuración.

Не буду вдаваться подробно в настройки (как настроить Open5GS или проект osmocom можно нагуглить без проблем), статья планируется все же обзорная. Позже, если будет время и заинтересованность читателей, возможно напишу более подробно – с настройками, дампами сигнального обмена и прочее. Надеюсь, моя работа вдохновит вас тоже на подобные поиски и развитие в направлении технологий связи.

Seeing what it takes for #VoWiFi to work, all the different things the phone talks to: IPsec to ePDG, IPsec to P-CSCF, AKA auth everywhere, SIP for call establishment and sending/receiving SMS messages (which are still encoded like good ol' GSM underneath). There's so many moving parts in modern mobile networks! Big respect to those who understand how all of that works.

With the shutdown of #3G and most of #2G in #Sweden I lost the ability to make phone calls on my roaming SIM. Not that I do it much, very rarely in fact, but would be nice to be able to do it when I need it.

My carrier seems to have an ePDG, so #VoWiFi could be an option. And then I found out that there is an open source IMS client stack: https://osmocom.org/projects/foss-ims-client/wiki/VoWiFi_with_Asterisk

Could be a weekend project at some point perhaps 🤔

J'utilise la VoWifi avec un Fairphone 3 sur le réseau Free Mobile.
Il y a environ 48h j'ai eu une perte de connexion internet alors que j'étais en Wifi. J'ai tenté de redémarrer le téléphone et depuis la VoWifi n'est plus fonctionnelle alors qu'elle est toujours activée au niveau du téléphone.

Quelqu'un peut-il me dire s'il rencontre le même problème ou au contraire pas ?

Почему не работает VoWiFi в роуминге

Привет, Хабр! Есть у меня телефон Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, который покупался по двум причинам - в нём есть eSIM, он поддерживается российскими операторами в плане работы VoWiFi (он же WiFi calling). И таким образом, я проживая вне РФ смог купить удалено симку российского оператора, которая мне периодически нужна и звонить и принимать вызовы без роуминга, находясь где угодно. Приехал я тут в Турцию и достал свой телефон и обнаружил, что VoWiFi не работает, хотя он включен в настройках. Написал в поддержку Билайн - те как всегда отморозились тем, что ничего не знают, всё мол должно работать. Тут нужно заметить, что я живу не в РФ и по месту моего жительства VoWiFi работал, но непосредственно перед отъездом в Турцию я обновил прошивку телефона (со штатной на штатную обычным OTA). В конце статьи напишу, почему это может быть важно. Ну что делать? А делать, имея роутер на OpenWRT можно следующее. Широко известно, что VoWiFi работает путем установки IPSec соединения с узлом ePDG ( Evolved Packet Data Gateway ). Для этого происходит сначала обмен по UDP порту 500, а потом по порту 4500. Вот и установим на роутер tcpdump и посмотрим, что за UDP трафик исходит от моего телефона командой:

Out of curiosity, had a look at the carrier bundles on #iPhone with regards to #EVS audio codec support:

* iPhone 8 and newer support the EVS codec (narrowband and wideband).
* iPhone 11 and newer also support EVS super-wideband.
* All carrier profiles with EVS use 16 kHz sampling rate, even for SWB.
* Bitrate ranges depend on individual carriers, but never exceed 24.4 kbps.

Above is accurate for #iOS 18.5.

I've been trying to get it to work on GiffGaff which is a UK O2 Owned/Operated MVO so I'm guessing uses a lot of the same infrastructure.

I haven't got it to work just yet but I'm close.

Got an email from GiffGaff about when the local 3G network (via O2) will be shutdown in August.

I've not found a LTE/4G/5G USB adaptor that works with Asterisk to all us to make calls, but I have been playing @osmocom 's instructions to allow VoWiFi using the SIM to authenticate, but I've not got it work yet. I guess I now have a deadline

OK, so I've got the StrongSwan IPSEC tunnel to connect by moving to Ubuntu.

But I still can't ping the VoIP endpoints (same as with the Python IPSEC), so I assume this is network filtering on the O2/GiffGaff side.

Will fire up the Asterisk port at the weekend and see if I can make a call (might also try my EE SIM)
