"Schools will need to give #democracy lessons to children from the age of 11 and ask teachers to leave their politics at the classroom door to help prepare for votes at 16, the head of the UK #elections watchdog has said."

If we genuinely believes in a democracy for all, we must deliver change in time for the 2027 local and Assembly elections. These are the young citizens who will live longest with the consequences of political decisions. It’s time to trust them, respect them, and finally let them shape the future of Northern Ireland.

#labour retrenched on some political reforms they proposed - I am disappointed that apart from retiring peers at 80 & removing the last of the hereditaries #lordsReform is a damp squib - I was hoping for term limits and for patronage to be restricted - if not direct election by regions as Gordon Brown proposed
They currently claim that #votesAt16 have merely been deferred - although in my view if they do not get this done in 2025 it will be too late.

It seems from the #kingsSpeech that #labour has chosen to focus on housebuilding and economic growth, but ducked some of the more dramatic reforms - eg #votesAt16 #lordsReform beyond removing hereditary peers
The measure most are lobbying for on the Labour Left - removing the #twoChildBenefitCap - I guess might be part of the Finance bill so not mentioned specifically now - but if I were one of them I would not hold my breath....
Starmer prioritising security & caution over radicalism

That puts a lot of weight on "couldn't" - I'd say "didn't"
For #voterId to have made a material difference to results it would have to be differentially adverse to one or more parties compared to othersAlmost all of us have these forms of ID - it maybe discriminates against young voters, who may not have driving licences, & tend to vote left of centre
#votesAt16 likely to prompt more forms of ID to be accepted - but voterId is here to stay I reckon

Well I suspect #votesAt16 once implemented will draw more young people in - the membership remains over 350,000 members - over twice that of the #toriesOut and one of the largest in Europe (tho not the million members it peaked at in the 1950s)
Under the previous leader membership rose by 350k so I doubt your "half a million" despite all the Glastonbury chants

@dcjohnson @SkipHuffman @mlohbihler
It really isn't - where did you get that from?
I think the impact of #voterId on results is way over-estiomated by some - and politically the thing to do is ensure we all have ID - including young non-drivers - and not try to rescind a measure that superficially addresses fraud (however phantom that fraud may appear)
With the manifesto commitment to #votesAt16, my feeling is #labour will address the issue in that legislation

CW: Reflections on #ukgeneralelection2024
Do not understand all the jargon - if you are saying #voterId cost #labour 40 seats I remain unconvinced...
With #votesAt16 due to be implemented, the issue of ensuring #voterId is as simple for a 16 year old as a 60 year old will be in focus - I think that will be solved by making provision not dependent on individual actions but more a rite of passage
I cannot see #voterId being rescinded - it gives too much ammo to the Tories

Well I note your view - but I predict #PR will not appear in the #labour manifesto, whereas #votesAt16 & #lordsReform might well do
