  1. 🌹 Me and Ford again!

This isn't the identity that fandom tends to write him with, but in my self-ship, Ford Prefect is a neutrois quoiromantic asexual gay man, a characterization that is influenced by my status as such. I - or at least the original host of the system (with whom I have this identity in common) - often explore my/its identity through this character.

The thing is, though, our version of them is a "neutrois quoiromantic asexual gay man" in the sense that they're an alien with an AGAB that is best described as neutral and finds himself perceived as a man as well as attracted to men. There are, however, situations where he cannot tell if his feelings for someone is romantic or not, and he comes from a culture that values platonic relationships more than human societies tend to.

With regards to this perception, he's fine with it and even comes to personally identify with it, but he simultaneously still identifies as the alien gender as which he was raised. With regards to this attraction, he's only ever been attracted to other gender neutral aliens before, and part of his identification with masculinity/being a man has to do with his attraction to men feeling same-gender like his attraction to people who are the same gender as which they were raised.

This was going to be explored through a fanfiction series we were writing, and if we do get back to writing Hitchhiker's Guide fic, those themes will still be in it, but for now I'm mostly just exploring them in my self-ship!

  5. CW: incest (fictional), self-shipping, kink, abuse (sexual and non-sexual), alcohol

πŸ‘½ thinking about how zaphod would feel about a particular thing from the timeline with my self-ship with him.

when we were very young adults, he'd get me drunk and feed me a lot of food, as a kink thing, and i didn't recognize it as that at first, but it normalized people pushing my boundaries while i was under the influence.

this led to me getting into a relationship with someone called gresh (an oc, not a canon character) who did essentially the sexual version of what zaphod did with me.

as a sex-averse asexual, it's easier for me to identify the sexual part of gresh's actions as having been wrong/unpleasant. when i tell zaphod about how gresh treats me, he recognizes a piece of what he did in what my acknowledged abuser has done.

i wonder how he handles that. i feel like he's unable to see himself as having been in the wrong - or at least he's canonically deeply unwilling to entertain that self-perception. and he's going to want to rationalize to himself what he did.

so zaphod tells himself that what gresh did was wrong because it involved sex, but what he did was okay, or at least significantly less bad, because it didn't.

but like. he still feels guilty. because he still knows what he did made it easier for gresh to do what they did. but he doesn't feel like what he did was actually wrong. it led to me more easily getting myself into a situation that, despite his manipulations of it, zaphod is genuinely unhappy to see me in. but he doesn't view the actual thing he did as having been wrong, just having had unexpected and unfortunate consequences.

in a way, it's zaphod taking responsibility for gresh's actions so he doesn't have to take responsibility for his own. he feels bad about what his actions helped gresh get away with doing, but he doesn't feel bad about having actually done that to me. about having exploited my trust and what little of a familial bond we had. my desire to have that bond and my lack of experience that would tell me what that actually looked like. he feels about what's happened, but not about what he's done.
