  1. The vocal fry of the presenter of the TV show I’m watching is coming really close to convincing me that this is unwatchable. It’s that bad.

  2. @carnage4life
With regards to the content: WTAF?!?!?!

But with regards to how #samaltman speaks:
What's up with all the #VocalFry?

  3. Today while driving I was listening to Britney Spears's "Oops … I Did It Again", and noticed for the first time how much vocal fry she's using in her singing.

And to make it easier for you to hear it too, I've extracted all of it into this short clip.

But be warned: This will probably change the way you're perceiving this song forever. Maybe other songs as well.

  4. Hearing a "professional" podcaster speaking with vocal fry and valley-girl up-talk just makes me sad and my ears sad.

  5. @SrRochardBunson

The segments are undoubtedly full of people with a #VocalFry, contrived hand-wringing, ending with a deep inhale, and then a sigh, “What ever shall we do…anyways…”

NPR is doing their best New York Times impression, now?

    The #VocalFry melted their brains.

  7. I'm still thinking about the fact that another dice.camp user blocked me over a post I made in August 2023 about liking #VocalFry / #CreakyVoice more than monotone.

  8. This is a brilliant look at vocal fry, what it is as well as its changing usage over time and in different languages. As usual, it's not the speech itself that some people have a problem with; it's the people doing the speaking.

It also shows why I still haven't given Loudermilk a watch. It looks like a bunch of hissy fits like the one shown in the video.

  9. Since Taylor Swift came onto the scene I haven't heard a middle aged white man complain about young women and vocal fry. So, there's that.

  10. Enjoying this (long and somewhat technical) takedown of the vocal fry hatred as ahistorical misogynistic bullshit--and I say this as someone who has stopped listening to some podcasts when both female hosts end up sounding so similar due to vocal fry that I cannot tell them apart.

So far, best part of the take down starts here (but it's worth it to go back to the beginning of the video)

  12. Huh. I think somebody responded to my post about #VocalFry then blocked me. Maybe he really hates vocal fry?

I thought it was a glitch at first as I can still see his account description, but it doesn't have any posts visible and the Follow button is grayed out.

I think he might have blocked me though. I don't know what that looks like on Mastodon. I kind of thought it would mean I couldn't see the account at all.

I looked at my post with another account and the reply was gone.

  13. I just watched a video about #VocalFry / #CreakyVoice and I have to say, unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I like it.

I think I do it a fair bit as well, as it sounds good to me and means I don't need to say "um" as a filler while I construct the next thing I'm going to say.

Also, I learned in school that varied speech was better than monotonal speech, mostly from the example provided by monotonal teachers.

  15. I recently learned what "vocal fry" is and discovered to my chagrin that I have it. But efforts to stop make me sound (to myself anyway) like Miss Piggy. Or like I'm talking in my head voice for singing. Help?

  16. Have you ever noticed how heavily people in North America use Vocal Fry when they speak? Once you notice it, it becomes overwhelming haha.

  17. Dr Geoff Lindsey defends #VocalFry, pointing out that it used to be a hallmark of toffee-nosed Englishmen and nobody said anything about it then...

"In a vocal fry register," explains Elemans, "your vocal folds are mostly slack, so they're #thick and #heavy, and they #vibrate at their #lowest #frequencies. And in the #falsetto #register, they're stretched very long and the #tension is very high. And this leads to the #highest frequencies."
