Madonna tops Taylor Swift in nominations for MTV’s Video Music Awards

Well, I saw that the MTV VMAs (video music awards) are coming up, and somehow Madonna is not only still in the game but is a nominee for video of the year. Of course, Taylor Swift is as well. So I watched both. Obviously, I'm a fish way out of water here, genre-wise. So I'll stick to the visuals.

To me, Madonna's video was just dark. The S&M look and brief militarism just felt kind of forced. Also, when you're 68 and dressing like you're 45 years younger, few if any can pull that off. The choreography was typically good, but I couldn't buy into the whole thing.

Taylor's video had a lot of different looks / costumes and the feel of the visuals was, like Madonna's, a fantasy. But it was uplifting. There was a bit which recalled classic big-stage choreography like you'd see at the Oscars, and that had me smiling ear to ear with joy. It was so fun.

So I'd definitely vote for Taylor between these two. But what do I know. Gimme some electroacoustic improv and musique concrète and call it a night.

I saw yesterday the #VMA show was held. At this point what relationship does #MTV hold to music?

Do they have any #music shows at all now?

Is their awards show no different than ABC or CBS showing the Oscars - nothing more than a viewing channel with no direct relationship?

Are they similar to #pitchfork and seen as just a music website?
