  9. Back in 2009, Ofsted’s report on VLEs painted a picture of promise but limited impact. Most platforms were little more than file stores, with genuine innovation driven by a handful of enthusiastic staff. The recommendations then - better training, stronger leadership, and embedding VLEs into teaching practice - were clear.

    Updating the tags on a single question with 4 tags can be time consuming. It typically takes 9 clicks to update a single question. If you have a category with 20 questions that is 180 clicks. And of course there is a good chance of making a mistake.

    My question bank plugin has been accepted into the plugins database and it can reduce that task down to 10 clicks.

    Although it is “stock moodle” it has some system tools specific to the platform. One that recently delighted me was the check of undervoltage. I was running it from a standard USB source and it needs something more powerful for real world usage. It displayed this message.

  20. I've just almost gone mad trying to figure out what is wrong with a "calculated type" question on #Moodle (our #VLE) that is misbehaving. Between a weird bug somewhere deep in Moodle and my own struggle to parse excel-like (but not exactly) formulas with little variables, I've blown almost 3 hours, done my head in, and haven't done any of the things I had planned to do today. Sigh. Many thanks to our Digital Education wizards for support but even they can't solve it. #academiclife

  22. If you are a Moodle administrator and ever ask yourself “What are people actually doing on our Moodle”, this report might help.

    It shows a graph that breaks down the usage of the activity modules. It could be useful for working out if there are training requirements. For example if 90% of modules are assignment you might want to put some training in place for other activities such as quiz.

  23. Software development is iceberg shaped, most of it is “below the surface” involving maintenance and working out if a reported issue really is a “bug”.

    I recently had a lovely instance of this with my Moodle question type. It involved 30 comments over about two days. In the end it was not a bug in my code, and the solution included input from two other very experienced developers.
