Once again, the Emerald Queen of the Desert faces off against the Lady of Darkness.
#Dioptase, also known as the Emerald Queen of the Desert, is rare and forms in arid conditions. With its glorious emerald to teal-green vitreous and translucent crystals, dioptase is popular with mineral collectors.
#Vivianite is a ferrous-iron-phosphate mineral found in organic environments and can grow on decaying wood, bones and other organic material. It is a colorless mineral, but oxidizes easily changing its prismatic and flattened crystals to a vivid dark-green to green-blue.

#Ringwoodite is a second chance for #Spinel (which lost out to #Vivianite earlier). Ringwoodite has the chemistry of olivine (Mg2SiO4) but the crystal structure of spinel (MgAl2O4).

Okay, #vivianite is cool (and in the lead, I see) and all. But #spinel! Older than earth! That got me. Like we expect that from quartz and diamond and what's that other fucker, but spinel! It seems so omnipresent yet unassuming... and bam the more you know.

Spinel makes gems and has some interesting geophysical stories to tell but I have to give the art vote to Vivianite -a pigment in the gorgeous blues of the Pacific NW peoples (including Tshimshian & Haida) & some European medieval, through 18th century paintings, Māori tattoos, Wiru masks from PNG.

Both #dioptase (Cu6(Si6O28*6H2O) and #vivianite (Fe3(PO4)*8H2O) contain crystal water, but vivianite has more. Vivianite is much softer (Mohs 1,5-2) than dioptase (Mohs 5), and at least Cu keeps its valence when exposed to air.
