Yesterday, at our "Sounds of Silents" show, we showed several short Hal Roach comedies (two #OurGang films, and two by #LaurelAndHardy) that are basically #SilentFilm's, but came bundled soundtracks--no speech, just music and sound effects. We have prints with "modern" sound-on-film, but these originally came with soundtracks on giant (16 inch diameter!) records. We have a few of these "#Vitaphone"* discs in our collection, and even though we don't use them directly, it's fun to get them out and show how the sound tracks of early sound and transitional silent/sound films were physically delivered. One is shown here with a few random objects for scale.
*Vitaphone was a brand name, and people use the word generically, like Xerox or Kleenex, but some movie sound discs might not technically count as vitaphone discs. These ones are though.
