  1. Red Sands #OHV area, east of White Sands, 20 miles south of #Alamogordo. There are over 100 miles of trail, with one major race per year, the Tarantula 100 (usually held in February). BLM manages the site. They allow primitive camping throughout.

  2. Overlooking the Tularosa Basin from Haynes overlook on the Sunspot Byway in the Sacramento Mountains. Heading back that way soon. Hoping to catch some spring flowers on the way there or on the way back.

  3. #Photographer Braves Disorienting White Sand Dunes to Capture Otherworldly Images - mymodernmet.com/navid-baraty-w

There are mountains all the way around White Sands (for orientation back to the parking lot). Keep an eye on the trail markers. Don't stray far from them if you don't have your bearings. Take lots of water.

  4. Unlike dunes composed of quartz-based sand, gypsum does not readily convert the sun’s energy into heat. As a result, the surface temperature of White Sands doesn’t get as hot as sand on a beach. Walking barefoot on the dunes is comfortable most of the year. Even when the surface of the sand gets too hot, it is cool just below the surface, because the gypsum retains moisture from the playa of the Alkali Flat.
