To throw one no-cost e-mail discussion group service that is well on its way with a very different model—the e-mail group belongs to everybody in it, not to the person that created it—here is our passion project.
With #VisionsUnite messages proposed to a group are promoted to be sent to all members of a group by a sampling of those members themselves.

@tryst Either way, in one entity or multiple, i like a lot about sociocracy as an approach to organizational structure (again, in one entity or across multiple).
And (to boost my own decades-long desire project) i feel #VisionsUnite style sortition-for-communication-decisions is a crucial fallback needed for large scale organizations to be truly controlled by all the people in them, and not have decision-making power come to rest unhealthily in a small subset, regardless of org setup.

We mostly take over Agaric's Show & Tell Thursdays at 3pm Eastern to work on testing and development of this #FLOSS project.
-
We are working on #VisionsUnite
Anybody can propose messages for everybody else to read—where everybody may be people in a group or platform—but each time a random sampling of that everybody decides if the message is indeed important enough to be put in front of everybody.
When we share the work of filtering posts, we give ourselves a short list of key news and information that is well short of infinite, without fear of missing out.
Everybody's voices, nobody's noise.
-
Our standing meeting to work on #VisionsUnite is 3pm eastern taking over a portion of Agaric's Show & Tell hour, https://agaric.coop/show

Fundraising e-mails find you by the dozen to ask for money when it's that season. Where are they when it is the season of building resistance against fascism?
#VisionsUnite means we control the e-mail lists and how we use them.
-
Further user testing of the mass communication platform controlled only by us the people, and possibly getting to its own domain finally, on the agenda at the weekly cowork session for #VisionsUnite in half an hour
-
my #FluConf talk was about this! As you've found it is a thing and its called sortition. (i came to the idea thinking of how to do mass communication where we, the masses, do not give up control to some intermediary— we are doing a very lightweight form of sortition for #VisionsUnite )
Anyway mostly i wanted to say that jury duty falls down mostly where it *fails* to be sortition— where the prosecuting attorney can, say, remove anyone with lived experience with police violence.

"we need to build our own infrastructure"
Some looking to the wrong people to change their ways after a half century of ignoring right wing propaganda displacing most media, but a good overview of the problem and that bit about needing to build our own media infrastructure is crucial to the solution, which i think #VisionsUnite is a key part of.
https://www.damemagazine.com/2025/01/02/americas-right-wing-propaganda-problem-might-be-terminal/
-
And i really think #VisionsUnite can be that space— not a replacement to #SocialMedia but the way we can engage with one another in more time-limited, less happenstance ways, to boost independent #media that truly informs and to break our own and others' filter bubbles in sustainable and constructive ways.
We meet to work on it in about 10 minutes (and every week 3pm Eastern / 20:00 UTC) at https://communitybridge.com/bbb-room/show-and-tell/
-
Building up an audience should not be a prerequisite for communicating something important.
-
Oh, last thing i was trying to fit into only two posts:
i realize that #VisionsUnite is likely to mostly make "wildly popular yet remarkably mild alternatives and tweaks to the system" stay in public consciousness, but i hope that when they system denies these anyway it makes people more radical and more organized (without the corporate mass media able to perform a lobotomy every single time).
-
Research showing that average social media would be way better!
Join us Thursdays at 3pm Eastern while we build that*!
* Not actually social media. Does use statistical sampling to give average – median – people the main say in what we all see. #VisionsUnite
-
And the message is not about 'you' anyway; the goal of #VisionsUnite is to give people equal voice, not privilege those able to build up an audience.
If you want to help think through any of this, here's that user story i started this thread with!
-
Hey all #LazyWeb enablers—
"The copyright / creative commons licensing of contributed content is clear and fair"
is a user story for #VisionsUnite (meeting in https://communitybridge.com/bbb-room/show-and-tell/ now!)
What should the agreement on a site say where the expectation is you are giving your what you write on it to the community and the general public?
-
better more direct link to right now's (and every Thursday at 3pm) show & tell on #sortition for #VisionsUnite people-powered communication:
-
For seeing and discussing a different use of #sortition – random selection of decision-makers – this time to build a mass media that belongs to all of us, join us NOW for the #VisionsUnite takeover of @agaric's #ShowAndTell
-
@SteveTux @davidslifka @reiver
this is self-serving and not exactly fediverse related but #VisionsUnite — for democratized mass media, equally as needed as decentralized social media — is still a small bite-size #OpenSource project where we absolutely know how much we need the support of #UX talent!
-
https://visionsunite.gigalixirapp.com/ is an attempt to be that, be a platform for democratically moderated mass communication. Not based on who is online the most but giving everyone an equal opportunity to shape what becomes common knowledge.
-
In addition to sharing ideas about #VisionsUnite on the app itself we have an issue queue going
https://gitlab.com/pwgd/visionsunite/-/issues/
Our biggest need right now is #UX review (what's the word when you do it the first time? 'view'? 😭 )
-
With #VisionsUnite everyone takes part in the responsibility and power of moderation—of editorial control—and as the audience scales up, the number of people needed to do that work stays under 400 (per probability theory).
-
In just under an hour, we continue our discussion, tweaking, and testing of the #VisionsUnite platform for equal-access communication at https://communitybridge.com/bbb-room/show-and-tell/
-
@damemagazine @KarlBode we have to make our own media, which of course you are doing. If we are going to get to implement any of the solutions you mention or dozens of others from a decade of National Conferences for Media Reform, we need to build up a network from the grassroots.
One way is for every movement and group trying to get messages out to collaborate— with democratically made editorial decisions, #sortition style.
#VisionsUnite is an attempt to build tooling for this approach.
-
@darius @ntnsndr @jalcine @emi @LeoSammallahti @schock @mattcropp
And #sortition (representation chosen at random) should be part of the governance; if not for an oversight board or improvements prioritization committee, than in a lightweight #VisionsUnite style to share the work of deciding what messages ought to go to the whole polity, to all the people who are members and deserve equal opportunity to influence decisions.
-
CW: re: ChatGPT, Society
@Thalslaw i distill my goal to "the most power possible for all people over their own lives" and prioritize ways for us to wield collective power; that is i still think *who* is making the decisions is a bigger problem than *how* but certainly while trying to fix the improve with things like #VisionsUnite i'd like us to try to make progress with the latter.
-
@roag505 I've blathered on way too long.
Again, hugely interested in what you come up with.
If you want to try 'taking turns', selecting moderators at random from all people willing to play that role (in academic literature, a form of sortition), we are building that for #VisionsUnite and would gladly try to plug into Mastodon.
More on #sortition making it possible for anyone to be a leader, it's practiced in some Adivasi communities in India among other places https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/dech.12651
-
@mbrewer @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs ever since i learned about the internet i felt that a crucial way to have mass communication *without owners of some kind dictating the content* was to share the work of deciding what messages go out— calling on people by lottery. So many years later, first trials of this approach to help #VisionsUnite happening at https://visionsunite.gigalixirapp.com/ with issues/development at https://gitlab.com/pwgd/visionsunite/
-
@zens @wakame since we have brought up all the big stuff, i've always been "if you care about any issue, you care about the media" and #VisionsUnite aims to be a major tweak to that side of the system.
-
For how to coordinate at the massive scale to be effective at that, for anyone who wants to humor a group building a #VisionsUnite prototype:
Register: https://visionsunite.gigalixirapp.com/users/register
And then join this group: https://visionsunite.gigalixirapp.com/expression/48
The idea is to have a movement where thousands or millions of people can have direct access to one another to suggest tactics; a statistically significant random sample of a couple hundred people will decide if the suggestion goes to all million people.
-
I wish projects like Couchsurfing, which did in-person verification, or CAcert, which tried to do that for SSL certificates – http://wiki.cacert.org/FAQ/Privileges – were in better shape, because we will need models—if not networks—to build on.
Certainly #VisionsUnite will ultimately need that and plenty of other #cooperative, #democratic, and perhaps even #conversation communities operating online will also need in-person verification that participants are human.
-
Tomorrow, Thursday, 3pm Eastern we will meet to discuss ensuring sufficient statistical and democratic rigor for making content moderation decisions for mass media as people called upon to take their turn inevitably miss it. But first we will have to explain what the heck we're building, so it is a great time to join! https://communitybridge.com/bbb-room/show-and-tell/
